What movie editing software is good these days.

I haven't done movie editing in a long time.

I grew up on Premiere pro but it has since gone crazy expensive.

I have a movie project to do. Does anybody suggest and really good movie editing software that is free or that I can one time purchase (aka NOT rent).

Define level of "move ediing"

For changing reoslution, croping pieces of movie, adding/removing audio tracks Handbrake is the usuall.
For something more full featured then look at lightworks for a paid application or OpenShot for opensource.

Pinnacle Studio HD Ultimate is $100.

Sony Vegas is up there at $480.

You can go monthly with Adobe Premiere CC, still expensive that way though.

I think google is your friend on that one. I'm only familiar with the pro grade stuff. There happens to be a TV studio in my office and I sometimes do their software installs, at least on the PCs.

If you're a beginner to the whole editing scene, I would get Windows Movie maker and learn the basics. Once you've got the basics down you can decide if you'd like to pay for a software or use a free software. If you like what you'll be getting from paid software, then get that. If you'd prefer not to pay, then a free program that I can recommend myself is DaVinci Resolve, but if you don't like it, there are plenty of other free software that you'll be able to find by just searching "top 10 free editing software 2017" for example.

Just make sure you have a decent PC for video editing.
