Could I have fried my mobo/components by plugging in an obsolete power supply unit?
I have a cyberpower pc bought new circa 2016-2017. Ran fine, smooth as butter. Been traveling and busy, and had this computer in a dusty storage unit, not climate controlled, through heat and freezes. I took it out and got it all plugged in this week, and nothing happens when I hit the power button.
Thinking the power supply might've crapped out, I unplugged it and connected a power supply from a much older computer I had. This one definitely supplied power! Now when I hit the power button on the tower, fans whirred and lights came on, but only for a half a second. Tried this a few times. Thought it smelled hot but maybe it's just the dust. So I held the power button down, and it whirred and lit up but started smoking profusely immediately. The smoke seemed to be coming from somewhere on the mobo or components, NOT the power supply, which was somewhat separate from the tower (I hadn't mounted it inside the tower yet).
Is it possible I fried the good computer's mobo/components by plugging in an incompatible or obsolete power supply? The newer (not working) power supply has a 'will void warranty' sticker so I can't take it apart, but is it worth trying to send into the mfg (Thermaltake) for repair if I just possibly fried my mobo/components?
Computer I'm struggling with:
CyberpowerPC
cpu: AMD FX-4350
gpu: AMD RX 460
psu: Thermaltake TR2 430W (seems dead as a doornail?)
mobo: Gigabyte GA-78-LMT-USB3 AM3+
old computer I took the 'replacement' power supply out of:
Gigabyte AM3/AM2+ mobo
psu: Insignia Model No: NS-PCW5250 "Total power 420W; Peak power 520W"
missing my nicer desktop while I use this weak laptop in the meantime
TIA
