What output to use for video transfers?

Hi, I hope someone will be able to help me. Presently I am connecting S Video output on my old Notebook with Audio-video input on my Sony HD Recorder to transfer and record downloaded videa from Laptop to Recorder. Now I will have to buy new Laptop, but none has S-video output any more. What otherLaptop output I may be able to connect to my Sony Recorder. It has only S-video, or Audio+Video (3 bananas) input. Assuming your new laptop has hdmi out ... I think your only solution may be to get a hdmi to svideo convertor, something like this perhaps:

Hi Robert 600, thanks for your suggestion. I was consulting this idea with salesmen in Source shop, and he was against it, that quality after transfer will be much worst then if originated as S video. I dont know why, but being ignorant in this field is hard to argue. My gues will be, that quality should be the same as if transmited via S-video as I am dooing it now, ability of the S-Video being the limitting factor.. On the other hand, if I consider that I may me transfering 720p as starting quality, some degradation can ocure due to lower ability of S video compared to HDMI which will be starting with 720p only.I will still check if someone who used this Converter published his experience. But enyhow, thanks for your suggestion. Mirek.

If you upgrade to a standard desktop (instead of laptop), then you won't need any cable adapters - you can plug some old-school graphics adapter with S-Video output. But you will have hard time finding such a video adapter, too (especially with Windows 10 support).

These days most video production is done digitally, including recording. While your recorder was doing the job in the tube TVs, it's no cut when everyone talks about 4k.

Last but not least - you'll lose just some time buyng this adapter from Walmart, and returning it back to them if you don't like it.

I'm a bit confused ...In your original post you refer to your 'Sony HD Recorder' but if the only inputs into it are s-video and 'Audio+Video (3 bananas)' I don't understand how it can be a HD recorder. Neither of these inputs will support HD ...they are only standard definition.

i also have no idea why the salesman would say "that quality after transfer will be much worst then if originated as S video". My best guess would that it would be very close to the same ... but then, I've never used such a converter ... I doubt the salesman has either.

As 'Alabalcho' wisely points out, the adapter could always be returned if you weren't satisfied with the result.

Hi Roberto600, my mistake -it is DVD recorder. Only other input is cable connection for TV signal, what ever quality it delivers.
Walmart as a supplier - will Canadian Walmart shops have it as well? I will have a chance to check it with them tomorrow. Shop in area where I live is very poorly staffed, and selection of products is not as in say Toronto, which is say 250 km south.

i had a quick look at the canadian walmart site ... it doesn't appear they carry it. I have heard that you can specially order an item from US walmart and they will deliver it to the canadian walmart of your choice. you could ask in your local walmart about this.

I have dealt with newegg many, many times ... I'm 100% satisfied with their service ... I too live in Canada although I'm very close to the border so shopping there is no problem. In fact, I have a US post office box for delivery in the states which eliminates lots of US to Canada delivery issues. I guess you are too far from the border to use this option though.

Ok ... I think I understand now what you are doing. Are you taking a video that you have on your laptop ... sending it to your DVD recorder and burning a blank DVD in such a way that any DVD Player can play the recorded disc?

If the answer is yes, then here is a thought:
The new laptop you are getting will probably have a built-in DVD burner (most do). There is software (some is even free) that would allow you to burn your videos using the laptop's DVD burner. The resulting disc could be played on any DVD Player (including your DVD Recorder). This would eliminate the need for a 'converter box' or in fact any cables whatsoever since everything would be done on the laptop. Does this way of doing it have any interest to you?
