These are my current parts as of now

Cpu - Intel - Pentium g4560 3.5 ghz dual core

Mobo - ASRock - H110M-HDS Micro ATX LGA1151

Ram - G.Skill - ripjaws V series 16 (2x8gb) DDr4-2666 memory

Storage - Toshiba - 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM

Gpu - MSI - GeForce GTX 1050 2GB

Case - Zalman - ZM-T1 PLUS MicroATX Mini Tower Case

Psu - EVGA - 500w 80+ Bronze Certified ATX

I am looking to upgrade my Cpu and Gpu after christmas and I am willing to spend in the $300 price range on each. I want to be able to play games like Pubg, Cod ww2, and other demanding titles at high settings, 1080p, and 60 fps. I also want to be able to purchase new games coming out in the future without worrying about upgrading. I would also like to be able to run VR smoothly. I am currently looking at an Intel - Core 17-7700k 4.2 ghz Quad-Core Processor, and I am debating whether i should get a ASUS GeForce GTX 1060 6gb ROG STRIX or MSI - Radeon RX 580 8gb Gaming x

Should i stick with these parts or are there better options? Thanks!

Solution
you're in a position which has several options.

first option, and most efficient one would be to, update your H110 motherboard bios, which will allow you to upgrade your CPU to a 7th gen intel. Since the release of 8th gen (which is an incredible upgrade for once), there are many people getting rid of their 6th and 7th gen builds, even retail stores have great deals on 7th gen. you could definetly get a great deal there. You could aim for a i7-7700 and a GPU of choice.

Generally the nVidia GPUs will be slightly cheaper than the AMD counterparts, and they are real good anyways.

you should for sure try and fit an SSD hard drive in there as well, it'll really boost your system performance. (you could aim 1060~1070 - non ti)

(the rest of your build should be able to handle this upgrade without issue) --- WHICH EXACT PSU model do you have? do you know?

NOTE: you may need windows 10 if you go with 7th gen. Windows 7/8 works on 6th gen (but not on 7th).

I've tried to find a BIOS update for my mobo but the website is very confusing for me so any help with that would be great and I realize that I greatly need an SSD and plan to buy one in the future. And as for the cpu I do run windows 10 64 bit. Here's a link to the psu

Thank you for the fast response!

Keep in mind this is my first pc build, I built it about a year ago and am still learning a lot about pc gaming.

Thank you for the fast response!

which version of windows do you have? OEM or Full version? would you know?

OEM i believe locks to your Motherboard (which would be another reason to keep it to save that 100$). i'm not sure if win10 can be transfered to new system build (OEM version)

The PSU is decent, so that's good at least. just wanted to make sure.

as far as bios update, you could watch youtube tutorials, there should be lots hanging around /// or forum threads on guidelines

I believe it's windows 10 home OEM, I purchased the key off of kinguin.

did you go through the registration process to retain your rights to the key?

well eitherway, if you keep the motherboard, your license should be unaffected. so now just lies your choice that's all.

I've given you a budget friendlier way to do things. or you could go for Z270 motherboard + i7-7700k + CPU cooler. which would take you past your budget greatly I think. (because you cannot use 7700k to it's full potential on h110 motherboard, it can't overclock).

Really, i7-6700 or i7-7700 would be best pricewise choices. which could be paired with a nice GPU. it would seem some of your games are very CPU heavy, so you definetly would see a great increase in performacne even with these NON-K CPUs.

I don't recall doing any registration process on the OEM key but I do still have the key... Whether I can reuse it if I get a new motherboard idk. I am not familiar with overclocking but will look into it if I get a better cpu which I most likely will. Another question, will the stock cpu that came with my cpu work to cool an i7 since it doesn't come with one?

i7-non overclockable come with a stock cooler (when buying new).

i7-overclockable CPUs, you have to purchase your own cooler. but there are some 30-60$ options which are pretty good, it's a matter of your budget. But, like I said, you'll need a motherboard for this one 🙁

This here will yield mid ranged overclocking. although again, you have to put effort and spend more money

Thank you for all the tips. I will count up all the money I make on Christmas and see if I can scrap together enough to get all the parts on this list and a good gpu. By getting this mobo I would need to get a bigger case but i'm not too worried about that right now. Thanks for the quick responses I'll post another thread on or after christmas incase plans change. Thanks!

oh yeah i forgot you have a small case, you can get some mini/micro ATX motherboards. just make sure they have enough features and connectors for your needs (sata/USB headers so on).

also, you should see how much space you have for videocard, you would have to measure this by tapemeasure or look on google, I didn't find it on Newegg website... so it would probably be best to measure the spacing if you want to reuse old case. (but a 1060 MINI should fit no prob)

and yeah, once you get your money together, best have another look at your options and see what results will come from a concrete budget
