What power supply brand to buy?

I'm looking to get a power supply for my build which only needs about 400W (According to PC part picker) so I'm planning to get a 500W PSU at a gold or platinum rating that's semi-modular. I know what I need from my PSU but I have no idea when it comes to what brand to buy since they can range from $80 CAD to $100+. Any recommendations?

Corsair, EVGA, Seasonic, those would be my go-to's at the moment.

As for a specific model, check out JonnyGuru for reviews on the specific models.
If you want to go for a Gold rated model ^ +1 to the Seasonic Focus Gold

Platinum models are a good 40 bucks more unless you find one on sale, so just from bang for buck perspective, it's probably not worth it unless you have your computer on 24/7 towards the top of the range of the PSU. And even then depending on your electricity prices it might take years to get the money back in savings.

Agreed. I've been using different corsair and seasonic over the years and always been happy. And I'm sure at least most EVGA are also good.

Corsair TXM/RMx 550w
Seasonic Focus/Focus+ 550w

Those are all excellent units, good/better, so depends on your budget as to which is the better deal. Just don't get stuck on size, there's many times a 650w version is so close in price, or sometimes even cheaper, so kinda compare where you stand.
