I am currently building a computer with a gigabyte g1 gaming gtx 970, intel i7 4790k, asus z97-a and a nzxt s340 case and im wondering what power supply i should get!

Solution

Good quality. It will power SLI in the future should you wish. A bit overpowered for your system as it stands, but we have given you plenty of options already. Buy the PSU you've linked, it will serve you well by all means.

oh well psu uses power of your motherboard, cpu, gpu and to make sure it dosent burn out like it happend to me ive got 500w and it died... my friend who has intel core i7 4970k,32gb ddr3 and 2x nvidia gtx 980,3TB hard disk he told me 600w or up if you want your pc to not get fired up

OP, don't just take my word for it, here's the highly regarded (and constantly referred to on these forums) tier list of PSUs: http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/id-2547993/psu-tier-list.html

You'll find the XFX Pro series in tier 1 of that list, and the Corsair RM & CX series all the way down in Tier 3. They're not junk, but they're substantially poorer quality than the (cheap!) XFX units which both @Whatever... and myself suggested to you.

Sidik54, please can you explain to me how a 145W GPU and 88W CPU can somehow stretch a top quality 550W PSU? It's not even approaching dangerous. You're far, far better off getting a high quality but lower-power (but still with capacity to spare) unit, than the other way around.

I live in Denmark. I can recommend webhallen, komplett and CDON. You will be able to find the XFX on sale or atleast reasonably cheap.

Hav en god dag min ven.

Mate, I have mentioned that PSU four or five times this thread now, rhysiam has done the same and now you do. He completely ignores it, though. I'll unfollow this thread now.

They dont have it in stock but it seems that you guys are pretty stubborn that 550 w is enough so that is actually good to know. can you plz do some more searching for me?

I run a 970 with an over clocked fx chip - totally stressing components to 100% pulls a max of 420w from the socket.
Factoring about 80% efficiency thats 340w total including 12/3.3/5 v rails.

By all intents buy a 600w+ PSU if you really really want to but the fact is a GOOD quality 500w+ will do the job easily with headroom to spare.

Did you notice there that you're quoting "2x nvidia gtx 980s"... that's 2 video cards. No question you'd want a larger PSU for SLI or multi-card configs.

I get that you're trying to help, but you're disagreeing with two (and now three) other forum members (who have badges on this topic). If your only basis to do so is something your friend said in a different context, you really need to consider how strongly you word your posts. By all means contribute and share your experiences, that's how you can help others and that's how we all learn. But we all need to be honest about what we know and what we don't know... and telling other forum members they're wrong when we really don't understand things ourselves is not helping. Keep posting please, but maybe just think on that?

OP - hopefully you have your answer now?

I didn't see that either. You need a powerful PSU for SLI configs. If you ain't gonna have SLI, then a good 550W psu is enough. Trust us.

OP -> I think here's you're answer.

IMHO @whateverworks definitely earned a best answer on this thread. The rest of us jumped board pretty late.

My only comment would be that I don't think 650W makes much sense, either go a 550W or jump to a 750W... here's why: You've bought a K series processor so I'm assuming you're going to overclock (otherwise drop to a 4790, or better still a Xeon 1231 and save yourself a bunch of cash). As many now have said over and over, 550W is just fine for that config. IF however, you want the option of a second 970 down the track, even a 650W unit is starting to cut it fine with an OC'd CPU. You'd probably be alright, but it's not ideal. For that setup, a 750W is the sweet spot.

So, if future upgrade potential is more important than minimising costs upfront, go 750W. Otherwise go with the 550W recommended above.

+1 that.
