I just bought a rtx 2060. I am buying a new monitor( current one is 1080p 60hz), and i was wanting to know what would be a good resolution to play at with a 2060, either 1080p or 1440p?

Solution
Not for a GTX 2060. You'll never manage 144fps average, or more importantly, 144 minimum FPS which is where problems generally occur when FPS dips too far, with that GPU card. 1440p 60hz, sure, that will probably be ok. If you want a 144hz monitor with that card, then I'd stick with 1080p unless you only play eSports type games or low impact games that tend to run at very high FPS anyhow.

If you play demanding AAA games, then I wouldn't do it unless you're willing to step up to a higher end card like a GTX 1080, 1080 TI, or 2070. And I'm talking Ultra settings too. I mean, if you have a very capable CPU and drop your in game settings to medium with a 2060, THEN you might be able to maintain 144fps, IF your CPU can keep up. Otherwise...
1080p.

1440p will do ok for most games if you're running a 1440p 60hz monitor with Gsync. I doubt you'll get anywhere near 120 or 144FPS if you go with a monitor that has a higher refresh rate though at that resolution.

Personally, if you like the eye candy and tend to like leaving all the sliders to the right, I'd stick to 1080p. If dropping a few settings here and there, and you'll probably need to check game specific forums for which settings in each game are most effective, and don't mind sticking with a 60hz monitor, then 1440p might work out ok for you.

Probably matters significantly what CPU you are running and how much memory you have as well.

Get a 75hz / 1440p/ freesync monitor.
You'll get that 75 fps on every game, it's already beyond what a human eye can notice so forget144hz ones : problem solved
More future proof too.

A video to see look how much stronger, 2060 to 1060, is:

Or keep your current monitor till more benchmarks for rtx 2060 come out, and it's easy to tell which is the best choice.

The rest of your system does matter.
Get fast ram with low cas (eg. Trident z 3200mhz cas 14), at least 2 modules, at least 16gb, and a high end cpu, ryzen 2600/i5 8400 or better.

I'm a fan of ultrawides, so I would recommend a sizeable 2560x1080 monitor. The wider FOV is awesome.

In my view, it's not worth paying extra to get, say, a 144Hz, 165Hz, or higher refresh monitor. I think once you get past about 100, there's no point. Couldn't hurt to have if it's only a little more than a 60 or 75 Hz monitor, and if the image quality is just as good.
