I'm thinking of switching ISP and i heard that you can avoid their monthly router fee by buying your own. I'm looking for a router that has wireless and works with Time Warner Cable internet/phone. My budget is around $40 or less.

Solution
Are you asking about a router or a modem (or a combo device)?

The modem takes the data on coax line and outputs it as Ethernet.
The router takes that 1 connection and turns it into multiple connections for multiple computers.

To avoid paying any monthly charges you will need both a router and a modem.
You will not find a combo modem/router for $40 or less, and even the $100 combo devices are not good.

For a cheap but good router look at the netgear wnr3500l, or for a small step up you can get a tp-link wdr3600.

For a modem I cant give you a good recommendation for your price range. I have time warner but had to replace modem not long ago. Since the Comcast/TWC merger has yet to be approved or rejected I had to look at what modems...

Look on TimeWarners website, and see which ones they recommend.
Generally any standard coax cable-based router would work, but their Tier 1 help desk dude may have an issue if you use something not on the recommended list.

You're not going to find anything for $40. Even basic stuff is at least twice that much.

Personally I'd suggest getting just the cable modem, and a separate router. The combo modem/routers aren't that robust with wireless networking.

Based on http://www.timewarnercable.com/en/support/internet/topics/buy-your-modem.html their cheapest combination device is gonna run you about $125. Even the most basic compatible cable modem is $70.

Since the Comcast/TWC merger has yet to be approved or rejected I had to look at what modems work well on both, this left the options of the Motorola SB6141 or the ZOOM 5341J (the J is very important). The zoom is cheaper and still costs $60-70. Options like the SB 6121 modem works fine on TWC but horrible on Comcast.

If you cant spend that amount then I suggest you just pay the lease fee until you can get a quality unit (and maybe then we will know the status of the pending merger), as having to buy/replace 3 $40 modems over a year or two costs more then one $70 modem.

Like they said. You'll most likely have to spend over a $100 going with either the combo device or a separate router and modem. You'll save money by buying your own device(s) for the long run, but you will have to invest way more than $40 up front.
