Should I get the Asus RT-N12 D1 IEEE 802.11n? Or save up for a more expensive router like the
Asus RT-AC66U IEEE 802.11ac?
There is 4 people using the router and I do a lot of gaming.

Solution
If you have a 2-1 device, than you should be all set. These function as both a modem, and as a wifi router, and you should not need any other gear to set this all up.

The AC-66U is a very good router. Although you will not be able to take advantage of the improved speeds without an AC wireless adapter (they make usb ones). This will still leave you room to upgrade in the future. This AC router will provide great N, b, g wireless signals throughout your place.

Wireless AC adapter meaning a usb wifi adapter capable of running 802.11ac wifi. And wireless will never be better than ethernet in terms of reliability. Flexibility though, wireless wins.

Go for wired if you can, as wireless has not surpassed wired specs as of yet. USUALLY your ping, speeds and reliability will be much better with wired. Less interference and other variables with quality cables and router.

AC wireless adapter - http://www.amazon.com/Belkin-Wireless-Wifi-Adapter-F9L1106/dp/B009AR2MFK

Wireless signals(Newest to Oldest) -> AC, N, G, B, A

Standards are backwards compatible. So if you have an AC wireless adapter you can receive ALL previous signals. N is not compatible with AC. Meaning, to take advantage of the increased, throughput, it will require additional hardware such as the belkin adapter above. These also come in pci-e cards for internal mobo connection. **NOTE** the newer signals require multiple antennas to get the FULL output of the signal. AC signal is ~162.5MBps, which requires multiple antennas I believe so the Belkin adapter above will not net you FULL AC speed.

By any and all standards, N wireless should be plenty for MOST needs. N provides ~37.5 MBps theoretical.

Yes, assuming your ISP is ATT Uverse.

Would the C7 be able to handle 3 people using it? Watching t.v shows , gaming?

6 Mbps for the download speed is pretty slow these days. Most cable tiers start at 12 to 20 Mbps, and the gov't has recently defined broadband at > 25 Mbps.

If you have more than one user, than 6 Mbps is gonna be slow if you want to use this for video watching.

I just now got the RT-AC56R and I'm connected to the internet but the same name from the 2-1 router is there.
