I tryed to see if i could find any tests, but didnt find anything that could help me..

My hardware is
ASUS Motherboard Gaming extreme
Intel Pentium 4 3.6ghz
2GB ram (dual)
Current graphiccard is a GeForce 6600 :-s

Its for best preformance in gaming

Im on quite a limited budget and i was going to post the same question myself, i apologise for hijacking the thread but i figure its better to save space =)

i was thinking of trying to find the 7950x2 version, if i could locate one and the correct PSU, would that be a cheaper option instead of the 8800 OC (The recent review from BFG) + relevant PSU?

I faced a similar choice early this year. I would recommend that you go with the 8800 series it will give you the best bang for your buck in this range. They are the fastest gpus currently and are positioned nicely price wise.

I chose to go with the 1950xtx because I don't see myself in the DX10 or Vista arena until next year by which time I imagine we will start seeing second generation DX10 cards and a more mature vista with some actual DX10 games I want to play ( I am not a big FPS player). I wanted something with mature drivers and a good track record with the games I play. I didn't want to be spending a lot of time fighting bugs and glitches. I have enough of that with the games themselves.

I suggest you think about your upgrade schedule, how comfortable you are with new hardware and the kinds of games you play. I think then the choice will be clearer.

For the small price margin go with the 8800gtx 768mb. The 7950gx2 is often seen on par with the 8800 gts 320mb so the 768mb 8800 should blow it away for what, 90$ extra?

I'd recommend a 8800GTS OC w/ 640MB. It's clock ends up being close to the GTX, but it's around $200 cheaper.

Even the stock GTS is only 10 FPS slower than the GTX in Oblivion. Is 10 FPS worth the $200 when you're already over 100FPS?

GTX vs GTS

It's just a personal preference but I don't like going for the uber high end cards usually. That amazing card will be just as mediocre as it's slightly slower brother in a year or two.

If you settle for 1600x (or lower) grafix then a 8800GTS 320Mb is the way to go.
Dirt cheap - For this kind of power
You dont really need more ram so why pay for it?

Disclamer
There will come games that will make good use of more V RAM but for most (who sit on a 1280*1024 or 1400/1680*1050W TFT) then why ...?

In a year or two use the money you saved for the next "best thing on gfx"

Avoid the 7950 at all cost. It's gonna perform either equal to the 8800 or at less than half the frame rate, depending on how well the drivers are optimized for the game you're playing.

For top performances (and price) go for the 8800. Until the R600 (and even then we don't know yet) comes out, nothing can touch it performances wise.

For good performances (altough not as good) and a cheaper price, go for the X1950Pro. That's what I use and not a single game disappointed me... talking about the FPS I got out of them.

Some very interesting points there.

Referring back to the points about monitor resoultion, i have a 17" monitopr maxing at 1280x1074, i noticed someone said that the 320mb 8800 would be a good idea, would that be the stock version or the BFG OC one?

The rig i currently have:

AMD 64 4800+ X2
Corsair PC3200 XMS 1gb
Aopen 6800 GT 256mb

I would not recommend the 320 mb version for $80 the 640mb version performs alot better. It does not really matter to much if it's the oc version or not.

That's not true. Performance between the 2 is very close. It depends on the game, the resolution and the quality settings, of course but it is close. The standard 640MB version is never slower than the standard 320MB version but the o'clocked 320MB card sometimes performs better than the 640MB one. For example: http://www.firingsquad.com/hardware/evga_e-geforce_8800_gts_superclocked_320mb/page5.asp

Didn't anyone notice that the OP is running a P4?
Yes, for the best gaming performance the 8800GTX would be the only choice ATM but I think that with the rest of your hardware it would be seriously bottlenecked. I suggest you save some money now and buy the X1950XT/XTX (a huge improvement over the 6600 you have now) and jump on the DX10 bandwagon when you're ready to upgrade the whole rig.
By the way, what's your resolution of choice?

Meh?

Buy an x1950XTX for the same price as an 8800GTS on the basis that your CPU sucks?

He could get an 8800GTS now for x1950XTX money, that will be alot more use to him when he does upgrade his CPU. An 8800GTX might not be able to achieve its full potential with a 3.6GHz p4 at 1024x768 with no AA and AF, but games will become GPU bottlenecked again @1600x1200 16xQ AA 16xAF

There is no reason to buy an x1950XTX right now. Ever. They are WAY overpriced.

x1950XT *MAYBE*, but even then 8800GTS 320mb is a better choice.

At anand u see the diffrence between a 320Mb vs 640Mb 8800GTS
/disregard the Q4 bench as it is with uncompressed textures (ultra q) - of course the card that that has most ram will win.
anything less then 16*12 the diffrence would be compleatly gone...

At Toms a 320Mb OC card vs a 640Mb card
And here u got Q3 without the ultra q see the diffrence? No? well there isnt any...

So once again
If u plan gaming in 1600*1200 or less then u will lose nothing (close to) to go with the 320 instead of the 640Mb version. and a slightly clocked 320 beat the 640.

Go with a factory OC card?
Depends on how much the diffrence is I would say.
Go with the cheapest non OC and OC yourself
