Ok, so a few years ago I built my brother in law a budget 1080p Gaming PC. The computer was easily doing 80-120+ FPS at med-high settings in most games. I get a message from him some time later that the computer wasn't doing so great on FPS lately.
OS: W10
CPU: i5 9400f
GPU: XFX RX 580
PSU: 650 W CORSAIR
RAM: 16GB DDR4 3200
MoBo: MSI Pro B650M-P
We live an hour apart so usually when we drive out, we are tied up in family stuff and no time to look at computer issues. I took his computer home and didn't see anything wrong. I just figured he was watching videos of people hitting much higher and was bored with the FPS he was getting. So, I decided to upgrade his GPU to an RX 6600 as it was on sale at the time and he would see a decent increase in FPS.
After a while of not really hearing from him on the subject, he says "he's not complaining". I'm puzzled, so I ask why? He says he "would like to be getting to the 165hz in FPS". I'm thinking OH, He got a new monitor! The previous one was only 70hz. Then I asked him to send a video of his settings because he should be able to get close to that without losing to much eye candy. I start going through ALL his settings and everything is looking good but then I look at the resolution..... It says "1440p"....
I'm like BRO! What did you DO! You seriously got talked into a 1440p monitor when you have a 1080p setup! This IS WHY your FPS is getting floored.
I suggested that he Closet the 1440p until he can afford to replace nearly everything in his computer. Then, step back to a decent 1080p because I don't think he has another option. He is playing Everything at pretty much the lowest settings to get an ok amount of FPS. I'm still on 1080p so I don't know for sure but I gotta believe a 24"1080p 165hz+ 165fps+ @ High-Ultra settings, has to be a better Experience than a 27" 1440p 165hz on lowest settings and only getting 50-80 FPS. To note, he plays ONLY online Competitive Multiplayers, no single players.
