What specs should I look for in a gaming LCD

Long time listener, first time caller but.....

I just bought the VX922 last night from CompUSA for $299.99 (+$20.00 rebate to make it $279.99) based on this board and reviews elsewhere.

I LOVE it!

Used a top of the line, 250 lb, 32 sq ft, 19" CRT for the past 7 years so I was a little worried I would not like gaming on an LCD. I was wrong - at least with this LCD.

I can certainly tell the dot pitch is increased but the FPS seem to run MORE smoothly.

I play World of Warcraft. Yea, no first-person-shooter but I can still say this monitor is at least as good as my old CRT if not better.
My video card is about 2-3 years old now - nVidia GEforce 5900(?? - I can never remember which model I have) and it seems to really like the DIVx and the flat screen.

LoL i think I was just looking for a reaosnto buy the cheaper of the two. But I relaize that with either chioce I cant go wrong. One is just more brighter (if that is a word). I dont care about brightness, i care about clarity and how great the picture would look.
Sounds like you like the vx922. I might stop off at another Bestbuy and see the 90gx2. COMPUSA near me has the vx922.

Hi. Wow, I think I saw that review but I must of missed a lot. Camparing both the gx2 and the vx922, seems like the vx922 is the one to go with for games. Its stable and very fast.

Ive made my decision: Viewsonic vx922 😀 😀

Any objections?

I run dual VX922s.

I think these are the best LCDs for gaming for price/performance/overall.

Tom's did a review of gaming LCDs and I think maybe there was one or two that did slightly better than the vx922, but they cost a whole lot more, too.

My friend has dual Dell LCDs, but they ghost like crap, and I really don't care too much for the built-in USB ports they have.

Only downside to the 922s I see is that they only tilt up and down, no side to side, and they do not move up and down.

would you rate the vx922 higher than the NEC 90gx2?
The 90gx2 is definitely slower than the VX922 -- over 2x slower and higher than the 16ms threshold that corresponds to 60fps.

The VX922 has a response time of 5-10ms.
The 90GX2 has a response time of 20-25ms.

There are, however, a few other monitors (some TN, some MVA, some IPS), that have response times in the same range as the VX922.

Copied from X-Bit Labs review....

"The monitor [90GX2] uses a TN+Film matrix with response time compensation. Its speed is overall good, except for a few transitions between light tones that may take as long as 21 milliseconds. The averaged response time is 5.9 milliseconds, which is higher than the BenQ FP93GX’s, but the specified response time of the 90GX2 is higher, too...."

Hiya. I got my monitor today. LoL free 3-day shipping and I get my monitor in 2 days. Everything is bright and no dead pixels. It perfect. I have to get used to the size of the screen and the brightness. LoL can you imagine how the gx2 brightness would have on me. I could light the neighborhood and everyone would be cursing me out. The monitor is very sexy lol.

Well, you COULD have turned the brigtness down... you know, to keep in the good grace of the neighbors... (Having high brightness is not a negative, it's just not a positive unless being used in a brightly lit room...)😀

LoL, I know about the brightness setting I just was laughing because the vx922 is less brighter than the gx2, I imagine I could of lit NYC even though Im 40min from it if I got the gx2 instead. But still, what a difference than using a CRT 🙂

The GX2 does rate brighter, but it seems you have the notion it's *blindingly bright*... like you'd need to wear a welder's mask to view it. Where did that come from?

just comparing the specs...vx922 270 to gx2 400, thats all. Im thinking of knocking the screen size down though, the native size is too small. Ill probably go back to 1024x768

I'd just like to throw a small question in to this discussion, and hope for a speedy answer 😉

I can get a 940BW for fairly cheap, but the 941BW is virtually unheardof around New Zealand, or at least at the stores I frequent. Soooo is there a difference? I've heard HDCP stuff being bandied about, but quite frankly I don't give a damn about that, simply because I don't watch any media. It's a gaming rig, as my sig so blatantly points out.

Is there any real difference between the 941BW and 940BW? The only topic I could find on the forums only mentioned HDCP in passing, but even then I seen no details of this feature on Samsung's site.

Commentary (and mockery) always appreciated 😛

HD may affect you as soon as games start coming out on the higher-capacity Blu-ray discs (rather than on multiple DVD's). Dx10 will probably push up the size of games. Content on Blu-ray discs require HD compatible monitors to view (and therefore load and run the game). That's my understanding anyway. However since there is so little general understanding of the subject I wouldn't expect this to become standardised for at least a couple of years yet.

I have faith in the hacker community to have that sorted by the time the blu-ray vs hd-dvd war is complete 😛

Nah, but seriously, I've had another look and the 940BW is compliant. It seems that the 941 is a revision/renumber only, so effectively it's a non-issue. I'm able to get it for NZ$100 cheaper than usual, so I figured I may as well take the leap and switch to LCD.

so whats you rating of this monitor? I am looking at one right now for my gaming machine...

I got the NEC Opticlear 90GX2 back in December and it's worked great for me. The USB ports on the side of the monitor have come in handy, the display is crystal clear with the Opticlear coating, and I haven't noticed any ghosting during intensive 3D programs. (FEAR, HL2, 3DMark 06).
