hi
im building a machine for a mate and was looking for a few differing ideas for the type of board to use. Im thinking, due to his budget, that I should go down the Athlon route (given that they still are good value for what you get) - unless anyone differs in opinion - and wanted to hear suggestions on decent spec but decent price boards.
im an athlon user myself, and run a ABITNF-7 S2 (G) board, which has good options. however, i wouldnt mind other ideas!!!
cheers all!!!

Socket 754 A-64 is currently the best value platform. With a CPU/MB combo around $220US it's pretty hard to beat.

Abit IS7 - 3.0C @ 3.6ghz - Mushkin PC4000 (2 X 512) - Sapphire 9800Pro - TT 420 watt Pure Power
Samsung 120gb ATA-100 - Maxtor 40gb ATA - 100
Sony DRU-510A - Yellowtail Merlot

Budget.. NF7 (not -S) with a mobile XP2500 u can overclock (probably min XP3300).

Slightly more the A64, 2800-3000 with a Socket 754 mobo is good.

well the overall machine budget is £300 to £500 (UK) so for cpu and board looking less than £150
think amd 64 is beyond that and more than he needs!!!

If you're across the pond you may not be able to get the pricing you need. If you were here you could have an ASUS K8N-E and an A64-2800+ for 150 pounds easy. The Athlon MP route with a decent MB would be 135 pounds anyway. Not much in the way of savings for DEAD technology. JMHO

Sorry.. yeah kind of agree.. A64 is probably better and not much more expensive.

I didn't get around to adding the A64 part. Notice I have edited.

Agree with you btw CyberCraig :frown:

Any budget favors AMD, they have the best performing processors and the less expensive processors.
