I have in my room a desktop (PC) just laying around and being an obstruction. The PC is around 8-10 years old (2003-2005). But the huge problem is the capabilities of being something useful.

Here are the specs:
-Intel Celeron D (I can't say more about the speed because there's thermal paste on the CPU and I have no boxes.)

-256 MB of RAM memory (DDR2)

-No HDD (But I can get one, just specify me how much space.)

-No OS (I can install Linux Ubuntu.)

-400-watt power supply

So, what can I use it for? Or is it better to throw it away?

If you need more details about it please let me know.

Solution
If you don't mind the small increase in your electricity bill, you could donate its cpu time for folding (eg. http://folding.stanford.edu/)
I took my old machine (also a Celeron D) and set it up so that my pre-schooler can play Dora the Explorer games on a browser. It made her pretty happy and she doesn't notice its lack of performance..
