What to do with an old system?

As I get closer to upgrading my system to a completely new build, I'm going to have a not-useless computer sitting idle. It's certainly not top of the line but is certainly not worth chucking on a scrap heap either.

I'm in two minds to try and sell it and recover some of the costs of my recent system build - or to try and get some use out of it.

Does anyone have any thoughts or experience on how easy it is to sell an old computer build? I'm particularly mindful that hard drives would need wiping etc...

selling is an option if the computer is still recent enough to be wanted. otherwise you can always re-purpose as a HTPC, Media center, NAS server or even just a good old linux machine that you can do all of the above with.

if you can do without the few bucks you could get for it (depending on what its specs are) i'm sure there is a charity in your area that would be happy to pass it on to a family that could use it. i work with one in my area and we fix up and give away a dozen or more a week dependent on how many we can get donated. that 4-5 year old pc may not do you much good for gaming but some kid could sure use it to do homework on :)

just a thought anyway.

Good point, it's specs are:

AMD Athlon II X4 640
8GB RAM
nVidia 8800GT
On board audio
3TB HDD
64GB SSD
(And a motherboard whose brand I can't recall without going home and cracking the case open..)

It's nothing special - but it does have an SSD and some reasonable specs - it's definitely not a slouch IMO but it's also not cutting edge by a long shot anymore.

sure could make a good media center or HTPC. even as a NAS server with 3tb of storage could save you loads of time keeping things on there to access from any device in the network. charity is a good option as stated too, even if you don't need it, someone else may.
