What to expect from i5-6200U and GeForce 940MX 1GB?

Will i5-6200u be a bottleneck for 940mx by being a mid-range and "Super Energy Efficient" dual core cpu? Or are they perfectly chosen to work together since this cpu "offers average performance, but struggles with demanding applications" and gpu is "mid-level"? Any information about 940mx 1gb gddr5? Because websites show that 1gb version of 940mx actually does not exist, but it's in the laptop i'm about to buy. Tests are made using only 2gb versions. Does anyone know if 1gb gddr5 version would perform worse in 720p / 768p / 1080p gaming than 2gb gddr5?

Any answers and information are highly appreaciated.

940MX is likely just the 940M in MXM form. If you were to compare this system to a desktop, it would be roughly a Haswell entry level i3 with a 650 (not Ti) at stock, if you're lucky that is. The GPU might be slower than the 650 due to thermal constraints.

Unless you're talking about 4 year old games, 1080p will be out of the question unless it's low settings

I've heard that 940m is from mid-2015 and 940mx is just a renewed 940m in 2016 which performance has been increased by 20-30% by adding a gddr5 option and making speeds (mhz) slightly bigger. Personally, i've never had an i3 and i still think they have not enough power, so i only use i5. 940m is compared to GT 640 if i remember correctly. 940mx 2gb ddr3 is 21% slower than stock 650 2gb, as i said before, there is no 1gb gddr5 version to compare and i believe that gddr5 would perform 20-30% better, so it's about to be almost the same to 650 stock. This is going to be my first laptop. I dont have gaming in mind, it's going to be for work mostly, but it has a dedicated video card and i would like to find out what performance could i get out of it since i really like GPUs. I've seen that the most recent games at 720p / 768p run at 30-40+fps at low-medium graphics on i5-6200u + 940mx 2 gb ddr3 machine, i added 1080p for really light applications/games, yes, it is out if it comes to higher-end game titles. I've read some articles and found out that 1gb vram is enough for 1080p (i wouldn't get less than 2gb personally), so i'm inclined to believe that 1gb gddr5 will be enough for 768p. I've come to a theory that 940mx might not be powerful enough to fully take advantage of 2gb vram, is this logical? But i still can't understand why i can't find tests with 1gb version of 940mx? I've seen a title "nvidia sthealthily releases 940mx, 930mx and 920mx", maybe that's the reason.. but that would be weird :/

Yes! that's the webpage i've been looking at, 940mx isn't that bad at 768p, since the ppi on laptop with 768p is bigger than my 1080p desktop, i should be fine.

Edited:
This might be the key

940mx becomes a decent gpu for 720p / 768p, but i would like to know if i5-6200u is capable of not being a problem/bottleneck for the system?

I wouldn't say that the i5 6200u is going to be a bottleneck per se, but it is a low power processor and isn't going to perform like a desktop processor. This is unfortunately the trade off for low power consumption/portability. I expect the 940m to perform better with 1 GB of DDR5, even at higher resolutions, just as we saw with the GT730.

The link below has a really good discussion and detailed reasons why DDR5 is is preferred over the DDDR3 on a graphics card and why even using half as much still allows it to have an advantage.

Not "slight", significant, and adds far more than that. The GPU is clocked 10% higher for most models, and uses turboboost like desktop i5s do.

Even though they are only dual core four thread, chips like the 6200U are able to run any 900 series mobile GPU (ones with M in them) well enough that the GPU is the limiting factor in most games.

It is slight though, from the i3 6100U (not the top mobile i3 anyway..) to the i5 6200u. Same base clock, the i5 just has a boost clock.

Very little performance difference. Much better off with a quad core and minimum of 960m for gaming IMO.

But that has nothing to do with this thread! With a 940mx, the 6200U (which is ~30% faster in single thread ) is a perfect choice, since both aren't perfect for games but certainly more than enough for 720p 30fps

30% over the 6100U i3? no chance.

Just like i7-6500u has about 10% performance boost over i5-6200u by having 100-300mhz higher speeds, which isn't a huge improvement for additional 100$ and "premium" i7 sticker. The whole skylake mobile cpu family is very close to each other (excluding hq versions).

Noone is arguing that for decent gaming a quad-core is a must, but a dual-core can still be a good choise, not for ultra settings gaming of course, but it does the job. 950m and above laptop gpu's are named gtx and can be used for gaming mainly, but i don't need that. What i am looking for is an "ultrabook with gpu chip", somewhere called "2 in 1". For education purposes mostly, but i feel like i must have a gpu installed and 940m / mx seems to deliver a decent performance without making laptops weigh 2.5kg. I have a great desktop pc for heavy game titles, but right now i'm not interested in any. Sometimes i prefer to check steam store for successful game starter projects (like 7 days to die or planetbase) and right now my eyes are mostly at overwatch. If i want good graphics, i can always turn on my desktop beast, but i want portability.

Now my eyes are on Lenovo yoga 700 (14")- it doesn't say the full model number, but it has i5-6200u, 940m 2gb ddr3, 8gb ddr3 ram and 500gb hdd + 8gb shdd (or smth like this, a hybrid ssd for windows) for 760eur. there is a ssd variant with i7-6500u, but it's 200 more euros, so i thought i could just replace hdd with ssd upgrade kit and save up to 110eur since the 4-10% cpu performance upgrade is not worth the money (other parts are 100% the same). (info taken from benchmarks and comparisons). from such hardware combination i expect 768p, medium settings and 40-45fps in not very graphically-intense games, but i still feel very unsure.. i've heard that lenovo laptops have a really low maximum cpu/gpu temperature which leads to throttling under heavier loads or cpu/gpu stressing simultaneosly.

Hmm.. can't find any threads about yoga 700 14" changing hdd to ssd.. hope it's possible.

Hey there, I had a similar question about this graphic card.

I'm deciding between two versions of the same asus laptop, both with 8gb ddr4 RAM and a fullhd 13" panel:

- i5 6200U + 940mx 2gb ddr5

- i7 6500U + 940mx 2gb ddr3

Which solution do you think will perform better when it comes to games and photo/video editing? The second option costs a bit more retail, but online you can find them for about the same price.

Thanks in advance!

Ok, and there wouldn't be that much of a difference when it comes to using the cpu for other things correct?
