What to upgrade in my rig to be GTX 1080 ready

Hello wonderful people of Tom's Hardware,


I built my first rig a year ago. It was a bit of a budget build, and have not been the happiest with my AMD card. Use my rig mainly for a heavily modded skyrim and a few major titles (Witcher, Fallout 4, overwatch, division, etc...).

I want to upgrade my card but don't want to have to replace my whole system. Will i be bottle necked by my i5-4590 and my 500W power supply? Here are the full details of my rig:

CPU: Intel Core i5-4590 Haswell Quad-Core 3.3 GHz LGA 1150 84W BX80646I54590 Desktop Processor Intel HD Graphics 4600


GPU: XFX Radeon R9 380 R9-380P-4255 4GB 256-Bit GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 CrossFireX Support Double Dissipation XXX OC Video Card


MOTHERBOARD: ASUS H97M-E/CSM LGA 1150 Intel H97 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard


POWER SUPPLY: CORSAIR CX series CX500M 500W ATX12V v2.3 SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS BRONZE Certified Modular Active PFC CP-9020059-NA Power Supply


HARD DRIVE (I also have 500GB SD drive now): Seagate Barracuda ST1000DM003 1TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive


RAM: CORSAIR Vengeance LP 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Low Profile Desktop Memory Model CML8GX3M2A1600C9



My monitor is and ultra-wide 2560x1080

I don't think I have anything missing on here and most of hardware is fairly recent, but I would hate to buy a GtX 1080 only to have it be bottle necked by my other hardware.

In my work we tested a i5 4690 (almost the same than yours) with a Gigabyte GTX 1080 G1 Gaming, and it work very well (we only tested crysis 3 and metro)

So, bottleneck its a no.


Now, i think a GTX 1080 for *x1080 is a overkill, a GTX 1070 will do perfectly the job.

Power Supply: Its a ok, but CX from corsair isn't very good, but it will do the job.

500W from EVGA Supernova series, XFX Pro/TS Series or Seasonic.
