Hi, I'm currently running an old build from back in 2014:
CPU: FX 6100 OC 4.0GHZ
GPU: 750 Ti 2GB
RAM: Kingston Basic 8GB
PSU: Corsair 500w
1x 2.5' SDD
and 2x 3.5' HDD

This build is not cutting it anymore, lag in nearly every game. I have to play in adaptive v-sync 30 fps lock to play smoothly but even that doesn't do it sometimes.
HELP! I'm looking to spend around $350 Aus (for reference the price of the 4GB RX 480) but what i want to know is getting a new GPU like a 480 or GTX 970 going to make a difference with a CPU that is so old? Other wise i could take that money and buy an i3, Mobo and some DDR4. What do you guys think is more logical? Will moving to an i3 give a boost in CPU intensive titles?
Thanks in advance

Solution
Well your cpu is a very weak gaming card due to it's poor single thread performance. An i3 would be a tremendous upgrade here.

Your video card is on the low end so getting a newer one would result in greatly improved performance, BUT your cpu would bottleneck any video card stronger than a midrange card like a 960 or 380.

Your kinda stuck needing a new cpu, motherboard, AND video card.
