[SOLVED] What upgrade to go from a 1050TI ?

I have just upgraded my CPU from a i7 2600 to a r5 2600, now im looking to upgrade my CPU. I have looked at the RX 580 8GB and the GTX 1070 and im torn between the two as i am not sure if the fps gap between them is worth the price? any suggestios? thanks.

R5 2600, 16GB DDR4 RAM 2400 (OC to 3200)

GTX1070 is what? 25-30% higher performance? ish. Roughly on par with the GTX1660 Super / 1660Ti.

Im from the UK

On Ebay, RX 580 is for around £120, whereas the GTX 1070 is around £200 - £220. Im planning on selling my 1050TI for about £80-£90 to go towards the next GPU.

Hmm, gotta be careful as you get close to the £250 RX5600XT which is another 20-25% faster than the GTX1070. That would be 50%-ish more performance than a RX580 and sips 30-40W less power.

to be fair most of the prices listed are around £150. the 1660 does look good for me atm though. I'll have a look at the 5600

I think im going to get the 5600 XT, if i sell my gpu and cpu i might be able to only spend arouund 160-170 for it so its not too bad. Plus the free games you get with it are worth it lmao

• What is your monitor's resolution?
• What is your monitor's refresh rate?
• Does your monitor have FreeSync, GSync, or neither?
  • If FreeSync, what is the FreeSync range?
• What specific games are you looking to play?

It does have freesync but not sure what you mean by the range.

Ah, then look up your monitor on this page, it'll give you the FreeSync range (minimum and maximum), and will indicate if the monitor has LFC. LFC basically makes the lowest number half of what it should be.

For example, if your monitor has a 48-100 FreeSync Range, then it can adjust the refresh rate anywhere from 48 to 100. BUT, if it also has LFC (Low Framerate Compensation), then that first number is halved, so your effective range is 24-100. Thus, it can keep things smooth even if the frames dip below 48 fps.

Since your monitor tops out at 75Hz, thus 75fps is the maximum displayable, then a 5500XT (8GB), 1650 Super, or 1660 non-super would be pretty good choices. The 5500XT 4GB is a little hard to recommend, whereas the 1650 Super handles 4GB a little bit better. The cheapest 8GB 5500XT is at the price of the cheapest 1660, which is a category higher in performance.

A quick look at PCPartPicker shows 1650 Super cards starting at $159.99.

However - it is really almost impossible to recommend the lower end cards, because right now, this 1660 can be had for $199.99 after promo code and mail-in rebate:

the EVGA 1660 Super is £250, which is almost up there with the RX 5600 XT.
What's your opinion on futureproofing though? The 5500XT and 1660 have similar benchmarks to the RX 590 which increases my doubt for these cards. Although the price for the 5500 XT makes me want to buy it, im thing the 5600 XT still just because of the fps difference between them in some games.

Yeah i get that it wouldnt make sense for me to buy the 5600 xt when only working with 75hz, however say if i was streaming, or if newer games became harder to run later on, would the 1660 super still be strong enough to handle them compared to the 5600 xt?

Streaming while gaming is more a CPU/threads issue than GPU.

As to 1080p being a problem in the future, we're JUST getting to the point where 4GB of VRAM could be a limiting issue in a very few games. I suspect that by the time the 1660 Super would struggle at 1080p with max details, we'd be at least 2-3 generations later on video cards, and likely a replacement would be due anyway, even with the 5600.

Now, if you were thinking of getting a different monitor (higher res, higher refresh, or both) anytime relatively soon, then that completely changes the equation.
