what would a 24/7 cost with a system like mine

I was wondering about power consuption and the electrical bill.

If i left my system(see below) running 24/7 how much would something like that cost me...

Oh i live in Toronto Canada. if that helps, but relisticly i think i could only ask for a what the Kilowatts are... is that the right messurement?

i would say 280watts per hour...kilowatts is too large of a measurement...i am not sure what that would equate to in a bill...

280w * 0.001 * 24h * 30d *$0.11 = $22.18
(watts/h) (convert to kw/h) (hours in a day) (days in a month) (price per KWH)

However here in power ravaged California our power costs ~$0.20 * 0.72 * 280 = $40.32

With 3 computers crunching D.C. 24/7 my bill goes up $25 a month. Thats without the monitor being on for the most part and 3 water pumps running. (jaydee)

I went without them for a few months and the power bill was consistantly $25(+- a few $) lower. After firing them up again for Distributed Folding it shot up $25. That has been pretty consistant over the last 3 years crunching other Distributed Computing projects aswell. No matter what the specs are though it is always about the same. I used to have the Abit KT7A and 2 Epox 8K7A's all with Durons and it wasn't any different....(also jaydee)
 
That was assuming 280w of power usage. Allowing for sleep states and no video usage, a computer should lower to 100w-150w of usage, which equates to 72-108 KWH at $0.11 a KWH you would get $7.92-$11.88, which would equate to 187’s figures.

It does add up. Modern computers do suck the juice!
up to 50W for the graphics card, up to 100W for a overclocked or high end CPU, 50-100W for all the drives and components, up to 150W for a bigass CRT.

So if your running 24/7 powersave on the monitor or hard drives might be a good idea.

280 watts would heat a small bedroom ( if run continuosly) and 150 would keep a 6 by 6 bathroom toasty all winter. Maybe we should think about what is actually on. We have a few miliamp gate ccts and a psu fan. Are we talking 12 to 15 watts here. Are you really paying $.11 a KWH in T.O.? In B.C. it's $.05+ and we think we're being robbed.

what you are forgeting is that not all of this energy is released as heat...although a good deal is...but you cannot say if it draws 300 watts that it puts out 300 watts of heat...some energy goes to doing work...although most is wasted...

I leave my conputer on 24/7 and my bill is like 30 bucks a month if I don't use the A/C much. I work at a data center. How about 120,000 per month in the summer. All those computers eat alot of juice. not to mention two 370 ton chillers running.

Accually i live beside that power plant...but that means nothing.

well our Electrical Bills here are Fuct to say the least.

because ontarioHydro is gone we have a new company called veridian.

We pay our bill every other month.
Feb -Mar the bill came to $500 (and thats with a $140 Govt rebate)
-Kwh Used = 6320
Arp-May it was $300
-Kwh Used = 3240

SO this is where it get messed up The follow is what our Bills look like.

Please Whisky, dont insult. FYI 280mwatt/years =2452800 mwatt hours. While we have many power plants that supply much more than that, we dont each have one.( not yet, anyhow ) 280 watts is .280 kwatts, so would use 1kwh in 3.571 hours. For reference sake, this is about half the energy used by a person climbing stairs, for an equal time. Because we use electric heat, during january and feb. this year we used a little over 5.5 megawatt hours of electricity in our house. Sounds like a lot, but it really works out to a continuous load of less than 17 amps on a 240 volt service.
 
We too used to heat the house with electric.. but the AC/broke down this summer and were prolly goingto be gettig gas now.

so yea the Electrical bills are crasy big in the winter, but its not too much differant then just adding the gas bill anyhow.

still though... i can't for the life of me figure out how to read that damn billing stuff.

i can respect flat rates in there, but all i want to know is what the kwatt/h rate is here.

Yupp thats why were switching to gas now.

unfortunatly i'll still be getting the Electrical bill...and still no know what the accual rate per hour is
