What would happen if a 780 and 780Ti are in SLI together?

I've searched the net and not found any definitive information on whether a 780 and 780Ti can be sli'd together. What I've read is theoretical and Nvidia themselves aren't clear - like their 4Gb 970 sales pitch. They say, as long as vram and chip are the same, which they are...

"When choosing SLI ready graphics cards, as a general statement for SLI compatibility, the graphics cards you are wanting to use in SLI need to share the same GPU (i.e. Geforce GTX 670 + Geforce GTX 660 will not work but Geforce GTX 670 + Geforce GTX 670 will work), Memory type (DDR3 vs DDR5), and same memory volume (1gb vs 2gb). GPU Core and memory clock speeds can vary meaning you can mix stock with factory overclocked cards."

I'm guessing they won't work but would trying cause damage to the card's I have or will it simply not work? Please don't advice buying the same of one or the other cards. This is an experiment, as was my figuring out whether a 780Ti could run at 60hz/fps 4k via HDMI after buying two 970's - the 780Ti can, much to my horror.

Remember, unless 780Ti actually means 785 or 790, they should be the same apart from a couple of hundred cuda cores - as they would be a couple hundred mhz different too but if they were both 780's or 780Ti's mhz clock wouldn't make a difference, they'd both run at the lowest card's clock. Would they both run at the lowest cuda count or would my cards fry trying?

Thanks, all.

Under DX12 you can hybrid sli different cards. It also will add ram, instead of the normal sli sharing ram, so you'll end up with a slightly better than 780 sli, with full physX capability drawn off both cards and a nominal 6Gb of ram. That's if you have DX12 or DX12.1 Under DX11 or lower, you are still relegated to standard sli/CF rules, which say that a 780 and a 780ti are different cards and therefore cannot sli.

Actually, you can SLI the newer/latest gen GPU's. And in your case it can be done. However, I highly suggested doing some research and finding someone who has done this before. Google is your friend.

Hope someone can tell you if its worth it to save you time 😉

What Karadjgne said. Keep in mind that DX12 isn't used by most games "yet".

Correction: DX12 isn't used by any games yet.

And as far as the hybrid SLI goes, that will require a dev to implement, which is probably not going to be often, even when using DX12. The stacking of VRAM has only been mentioned by AMD, and due to how games are developed, is likely to be very limited at best.

For now, you are best off not even considering it.
