I play a bunch of different pc games and the ones that aren't too hard on a computer i get decent fps, but games like shooters for example I really struggle to keep 60+ fps. I have been debating between saving up and replacing my pc all together or if it would be worth it to just get a better video card or processor. Or something along those lines. I am curious to know what would help the most for gaming to boost fps and maybe be able to play at medium to high settings. Anyways here are the specs I am open to all suggestions thanks!

CPU: intel(R) Core(TM) i7-3770 CPU @ 3.40GHz
Installed memory (RAM): 8.00 GB
Operating system: Windows 10 64-bit
Video card: NVIDIA GeForce GT 620
Storage: 1TB

I am hoping to be able to build a solid pc for under a 1000, but I was hoping maybe upgrading my gpu or something along those lines might help enough that I wouldn't have to spend the money for a whole new pc yet.

I'd say your cpu is fine, the i7 3770 shouldn't be the bottleneck in your pc. Upgrading your gpu would have a much more substantial effect on performance, what I recommend is the Sapphire R9 380 Nitro which costs $210. It's one of the best mid range cards you can buy. BUT check your power supply and make sure it is around 550-600W. If it isn't, the GTX 960 would be a much better option, from that you can buy any brand really but I really recommend Gigabyte or MSI.

Edit: Also I noticed you don't have a SSD, if you just add a 120gb ssd or a 250gb if you can afford it, it will GREATLY increase the responsiveness and load times for applications

It helps in game load times, and just general performance as the cpu can write and read data much faster. If you can afford it go for it :)

If you can't you can always get it later, the main thing is the gpu
