What would you upgrade?

I apologize if this post isn't in the correct format. Three years ago this site gave me the knowledge and nerve to build my very own system. I spent about $1,250 and if I'm remembering correctly this included an i5, Asus Z87A, GTX 760, 8 GB ram, small SSD drive with larger traditional HDD. The system has worked really well for me and other than the HDD failing within the first year and it being replaced under warranty, I haven't had any issues. I didn't buy a monitor at the time so my monitor is now about 7 or 8 years old and it runs at 1920 x 1200 resolution.

Currently I play DCS World more than anything else. It runs without issue but obviously being able to see the enemy sooner rather than later is critically important. I haven;t tried to run it on the highest graphical settings. I guess I'm wondering if I'm hurting myself with my current monitor or is there something else I should upgrade?

Replacing the GPU by itself should give you much higher detail available on the screen, but if the game's graphics settings are employed right by the developer, it shouldn't let you see your targets any sooner. The higher framerate of a newer card, or lower settings would help see the target just that small bit sooner, though. (A 970 would be great for the 1920x1200 monitor)

A 4K monitor would be nice, but you should upgrade your video card to be able to use it without slowing your game down.
The GTX 970 would work well... save up, get both at the same time, kick rear ends.

Raising the monitor resolution again, should not allow you to see the targets sooner, but the quality of the image will be better. (A 970 may be good for QHD, and R9 290/390 or a 980 would be great for QHD) (4K @>30" would be glorious, but would need Fury X/980 TI/Titan X)

The good news is that for the price of the 970/390, in just a few months, both teams should be releasing products that can top them.

My advice is to wait a few months (at least 2) look at the reviews for the Polaris/Pascal offerings, and enjoy from there.

(Disclosure, I have a 390 driving a FS 27" QHD monitor for games and a IPS QHD screen for color work, so while I prefer AMD, I try to include nVidia in my responses.)
