Morrowind. Okay.. not a shooter but it does have space-over-space cells
and has a map feature. It's not an auto-map system as the maps are
pre-rendered bitmaps that are blacked out until you explore the area fully.

Sorry, I meant to infer "modern". The fact that older ones had maps was
assumed.

Well, Jack carries around that PDA/phone device. The game designers could
have easily rigged the story such that Doyle downloaded maps to it for him.
Personally, I think it would have ruined the game somewhat. Exploring is
part of the fun of the game... i.e., wondering when the road ends, what's
over the that hill, around that bend, etc.

LOL. None of you stupid dickwads read the OP did you?
He's talking about AUTOMAPS.

Plus Riddick plus pretty much ever tactical shooter out there, from
Americas Army to Project IGI.

Check out www.gamefaqs.com. The PC walk through is incomplete, but
there are a few complete ones in the Xbox area. There are probably
slight differences but I would think that it is mostly the same game,
especially when it comes to cig placement....

Yeah, true, but I like playing cartographer sometimes & revealing the entire
map! (I still do it in CoH :)

Sometimes I just want it to stay saved! You know, for a little bit?
I feel like the maid; "I just cleaned up this mess! Can we keep it clean for... for ten minutes!"

Replace 'spamfree' with the other word for 'maze' to reply via email.

You're misunderstanding the question. Or all the rest of us are.

Most of us interpreted WM's question to refer to an in-game map that the
player can use to see where he's been.

Maps still work fine. Either 2D (KOTOR, Zelda WW) or 3D maps (Metroid
Prime).

Of the recent FPS games, Doom 3 is probably the closest of needing an
automap due to the tight maze-like indoors levels. "Fortunately" Doom
3 was very linear, so you didn't necessarily get lost that easily. But
there were some times where I went "WTF? Didn't I visit this area
already? I guess I am going the wrong way.".

Halo was a bit similar sometimes.
