whats a decent scanner?

I'm looking into a scanner that is in the range from free to maybe $150. Depends on my cash flow. I would be intersted in HP scanners. Epsons i'm not sure about or canon kind iffy about them. I do know Hp's make good scanners. I'd like to have one that has firewire support maybe but definitly usb. If anyone knows anything about a good scanner they have used or know of one i would greatly appreciate it!

Basicly i would be using it to scan in notes and HW's so something that has an excellent program bundle to read hand writing and convert it to text.

thanks!

btw i just wanna say that the attack today was and is the most cowardly thing ever done. The pearl harbor incident as bad as that was the japanese (hehe my mistake) at least had the guts to face our military head on and not the civilians. I think we all should sit and pray for the families who are involved and for our own nation to stand strong against this evil!

i just wanna leave quote from notradamous's prediction.. pretty scary...

"In the City of God there will be a great thunder, Two brothers torn apart by Chaos, while the fortress endures, the great leader will succumb" , "The third big war will begin when the big city is burning"

of course it can mean anything it depends on how you interpret it, but it's there take it as it is.

USB my friend is slower than fire wire and scsi by a long shot. Sure you want one of those usb things, depends on how much you use it and since your budget is restrictive it might just have to do. HP make good scanners. The software I dont know about, good luck with it.

Yeah very cowardly, actually Pearl harbour was a US base on non US teritory at that time, still was shocking though.
Seems like a I just watched a movie! But sadly it isn't that way, all my sympathies to all from Australia...

i know that ... just firewire scanners are kind of expensive. Plus i don't have firewire ports anyway until i get my ATI radeon 8500DV card :) so it would have to support both usb and firewire anyway. I don't plan to get a scanner for awhile anyway so ... just wondering what is a good scanner .. i always do research for 4 months before i buy something.

I have an Epson 1200U (usb) which has been great scanner (2 years now). I would reconmend it to all. You can probably still find this unit for $100 or less but the new version 1240U has been out for awhile now. You may like to check Epson's site for online buying they may have some refurbished unit ??. But I have not had a problem and the scanning is FAST and GOOD Imaging. It has 1200 x 2400 optical, most articles I read said not to look at the software resolution but only hardware. Epson also makes a combo unit that has a photo adapter which is cheaper than purchasing seperate. I believe I saw the 1240u on Gateway 2000's online site for $150 but that was awhile and it may have come down. You get on their email they give good deals on shipping (free), discounts on total order purchase. This is where I purchased mine and at the time I did get free shipping and no sales tax on internet purchases.

Had Biggggg problems with HP unit I had considered.

My thoughts for you to consider.

Good scanners:

Epson or Microtek. I've used both, extensively. I have no experience with the Canon's ... and so, no comment.

Hewlett-Packard scanners? I've went through several of them until I finally got my mind right. They work well, at first ... IF you have the correct drivers and imaging software for your OS. Major upgrades are not free, and not downloadable.

In the end ... I finally decided to classify them in the "disposable" category, like a big stack of used toilet paper. When they break, you throw them away. I've tossed out three in the past four years.

On the other hand, I've had my SCSI Microtek ScanMaker 4 for two years, and it is flawless. And the Epson's I've used were impressive, especially for the price ... and pretty fast, even on a USB port.

My 49 cents. (Inflation, ya know)

P.S. I wouldn't expect much out of any OCR software. I've never used any that I thought was satisfactory. You are better off just editing in a Word Processor, and scanning as an image.
