What's the best 19in. monitor for a $300 budget for a new PC?

depends mainly on what you want to do. Best text=shadow mask. best graphice=aperture grill.
Good in that price range: Viewsonic, Nec, and I have been looking at a cornerstone at monitorsdirect.com
Read the reviews and then shop around.

Personally, I like the KDS 19" monitors. The Trinitrons, not the shadow masks.

You can get a decent one (1600x1200@75hz) for under $250.

You should check out the image to be safe. It sounds great, but the tube is not the only part of the monitor that accounts for image quality. The electronics make a big difference. I saw some kds at a fair and they looked really good a few feet away, but when I got close, convergence errors abounded. ADjustments could not correct the problem. "Real" sonys looked better even though the tube was identical.


Quality is better than name brand, even regarding beloved AMD.

The thing the $550 Sony's have over the $250 KDS's is contrast.

The sony monitors kick ass when it comes to contrast. If you put a rolling movie, or even a decent quality image on both monitors, and set them side-to-side, the difference is just glaring. Sony contrast spanks just about everyone else. At least, until you get up to the $900+ monitors.

So, I'm not knocking the sony's. I'm just saying that the $250 KDS's aren't terrible...

Perhaps the recurring instances of KDS convergence errors I saw were just coincidence. Either you are less picky or you had the fortune to see some kds with better convergence than did I.

Quality is better than name brand, even regarding beloved AMD.
