I just purchased a new PC from Dell (XPS 8700 with 4th Generation Intel Core i7-4790 processor (8M Cache, up to 4.0 GHz)). It comes stock with 8GB Dual Channel DDR3L 1600MHz. On my old rig, I have 32GB DDR3-1333 CL9 (Kingston Hyper X blu). My question is should I use the old rig's memory (32GB) or stick with the lower amount of Dell memory (8GB) or mix the two (24GB). From my understanding, if I mix the 2, the speed will drop down to the slower speed anyways, so I thought that it might be best to use all 4 DIMM's and go with 32GB. The computer is used at home for work with multi-tasking, gaming, un-raring/unzipping files, etc. Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks!

Hello

Please understand the concept of Ram.. A little desk/table can have may be 2-4 files/items opened at a time. But imagine a bigger desk at work where you have computer, laptop , docking station, your files, chargers, mobile phones, your bag, keyboard mouse and many other things you want to keep on the table.

Bigger the size of ram better for you as you can do multiple things simultaneously. You can keep a game opened , along with itunes and video editing software , chrome , emails, apps anything.

Now yo must be thinking about speed. 32 Gb 1333mhz vs 8 GB 1600 mhz both on dual channel. Seriously there is very minute difference in these both speed types provided you go in the bios and check that are you actually running on 1600...

Now yo must be thinking about speed. 32 Gb 1333mhz vs 8 GB 1600 mhz both on dual channel. Seriously there is very minute difference in these both speed types provided you go in the bios and check that are you actually running on 1600 mhz?? Most mobos will have them set to default to 1333 mhz which requires you to change them manually. Bu trust me not much difference and you will not notice unless you want to monitor the latency and all that. but 32 gb is way better than the 8 GB.

Another thing you will be thinking is "Can I mix and match these rams ? ". I would suggest avoid doing that cause personally I wouldn't have done that. It will have the performance reduced to 1333 mhz so whats the point of keeping 1600 mhz anyways ?

Let me know if you have any other queries .

Thanks
Amit
