what's the best SSD for the money I should get?

I would go with the Crucial MX100 series - 128GB for around 75$, you can get 256GB for around $100-110... Hard to beat that.

I went for a 240GB SSD personally, that will hold your OS and a handful of your most played games (or at least games that benefit from the SSD). Truth be told 120GB is probably plenty for OS + a couple games, but the 256 is great bang for the buck when you consider $/GB.

The MX100 is cheap for a reason (not particularly good write performance). You get what you pay for
in this game. If you want reliability, buy an 840 EVO, or indeed any of the Samsung series from the
830 onwards (though the 830's write performance is a bit dated now).

You sure about that?

The two are comparable, and make use similar NAND, etc. Further, Crucial has a few tricks up it's sleeve that Samsung doesn't (namely the power protection and data protection stuff).

I think the two trade blows, but the best bang for the buck? I'll give that to the one that costs 20-30$ less.

P.S. - I left out arguably one of the most important factors. Crucial uses MLC, and the EVO uses TLC. In theory, MLC has a longer life span (though I won't claim to argue that it's substantially better in practice).

You realize that crucial ssd are made by Micron? There isn't a more reliable name in the industry! Micron has been making RAM since 1980...

Ok Samsung may win on the software tool department, but I always fresh install windows when I install a new boot drive so w/e 😉

You can say whatever you want, but the EVO is not a better quality drive... On the contrary, if either is better, I'd give it to the MX100.
