Newer is usually better but don't use one version's results to compare with results from other one. They are free so you can use both.

Like CountMike said, it's important to compare the same version of test. If you're looking at scores from r15 make sure you're also benching with r15. Using an r11 score compared to an r15 score won't have much meaning. I don't know all the technical changes but usually it's the internal software algorithms, updates in how the benchmark is executed and what sort of instruction sets it's capable of using.

Updated/newer versions usually have improvements made to the code to make the test more accurate and compatible with newer cpu's. Some of the cpu's likely weren't available back when r11 was introduced.
