What's the major difference between Dell Inspiron 7000 and 5000?

In particular, I'm looking at these models but I'm not sure why there is such a huge difference in price. The specs are very similar. The 5000 actually looks thinner than the 7000. Are these good laptops? Should I buy them?

7000 have more SSD vs HDD, more RAM. Dedicated GPU.

Both the links don't work. But as far as I am aware, it will be the storage, ram and dgpu that ramps the price.

Yeah, pretty much the difference is 16GB vs. 8GB of RAM, 512GB SSD vs. 1TB HDD and Nvidia 845m vs. Intel HD 5500 graphics core.

RAM is pretty cheap, but companies charge a premium for it. For example, Lenovo adds $150 to the price when you increase the RAM from 8GB to 16GB. But you should be able to buy 16GB of RAM for around $100.

SSDs are pretty popular. Because of that companies can charge you a premium for it. For example, if you configure a Lenovo laptop with a 512GB SSD instead of a hard drive that will increase the cost by $500 or so. However, you can buy a decent 512GB SSD yourself for around $200. High performance 512GB SSD generally starts at around $275, but depending on the brand and how exceptional the performance is some 512GB SSDs sell for over $500.

The nVidia 845m.... Well, there is nothing you can do about that if you want a Dell with the nVdia 845m then you have to buy the laptop that comes with it there is no way to add a GPU to laptops. So if you really want it, then you need to pay for the RAM and SSD that comes with the laptop.



Regarding not being able to install a GPU in a laptop.... There are exceptions. A few gaming laptop models will have a MXM interface where a high end dedicated mobile GPU is installed. Some manufacturer solders the GPU into that interface though while others do not. Gaming laptops with a useable MXM interface generally starts at around $1300 - $1400 and only in specific laptop models.
