Calling all FPS veterans.

What were the absolute hardest single player games out of all the FPS games you've ever played at hardest level difficulty?

A few come to mind for me:

Doom 2 in Nightmare mode (enemies respawn)
I think the only way I ever made it through that was because there were so many monsters spawning in on that last scene, my computer could barely keep up. That slowed down the framerate enough to avoid all the incoming and get those rockets through the hole. And Resurrection of Evil (Doom 3) the last scene took a while too.

Brothers in Arms- Hell's Highway
That game at hardest level gave me a run for the money.

Hexen- Seven Portals
Hard because of puzzles more so than monsters...

NOLF
There were some pretty tough bosses in that game at hardest level...

FPS games just don't seem as hard to me these days... You could put Unreal Tournament in hardest level, and it would keep you on your toes.

So what were some tough ones for you?

Metro2033... because I refused to turn down the graphics from max and tried to play it with ~15fps (then I just refused to play it 😛).

Lets see:
Quake 2 hardest difficulty no deaths: that was an old challenge between me and a friend, first to get through the game like that, well, wins. Hard due to the multiple insta-death platforming sequences here and there, as well as some nasty enemies. Ammo actually becomes scarce too. It was really quite an interesting thing to do - I found that I was burst firing my machine gun or even using single shots, felts more like a tactical shooter than quake 2 😛.

Other than that self imposed difficulty ARMA2 and Operation Flashpoint are difficult, however AI issues do impose difficulty due to broken game rather than difficulty due to difficult game. None the less fun. (I haven't played either in patched states, so I don't know if it improved).

SystemShock 2 - I kid you not, I find that game insanely hard. Although it's not technically a fps.

Serious Sam - ... I don't want to talk about this game

Descent - I never had a clue in hell where I was going. Didn't help.

For those having issues with Oblivion and FO3, it's just a question of getting a hang of how the gameplay works. I didn't struggle with Oblivion as I knew the gameplay from Morrowing, and before that Daggerfall, however the combat isn't very fluent, or nice. It's not hard when you understand how to play, and realise that it's not a balance gamed at all, but once you're past that and on the overpowered route it's easy.

FO3 on the other hand is just a strange game in my opinion, it took me a long time to 'get the hang of it', but once I figured it out on a lower difficulty jacking up the difficulty slider didn't make much of a difference.

STALKER - much like my comment on FO3 above, stalker isn't that hard once you know what to do, but until you do, it's hard.

I'm not sure how anyone could find FEAR hard, it was boring-ly easy (fear 2 even worse, I really had to push myself to finish it... just for the sake of finishing it). Similarly Crysis really isn't hard on Delta, atleast it's not if you're the con-confrontational sneaking type. Riddick is a fantastic game, but once again, not very hard imo, the hardest part is brawling the first boss I think, took me ages to kill him, once that was done it wasn't hard so long as you were smart with the stealth and the environment.

Wampbit, nice reply.

Speaking of brawling, there is a particular scene in Mafia II where on one adventure you have to fist fight three dudes in a row- who get progressively tougher. And the mission is time limited with your damage accruing across the three fights- meaning you got to face the toughest dude with the least health left. You have to win the three fights with enough time still left to drive, near perfectly, to the safe zone. At hardest level difficulty that was most definitely a bitch. Only way I made it was being really agressive in the fights, swinging and dodging constantly, never letting up to finish them as fast as possible. Several times I finished the fights only to end up getting killed by the cops on the drive back as you desperately race your way back to beat the clock but instead get chased down by the law. :fou: But that's my kind of fun. 😀

Buy any game of 90's end...you'll find them hard enough.

to me its Doom3 in nightmare mode.
Quake 3 arena in nightmare mode.
(cant think of a 3 one xD )

i can see BIA games are mentioned here. i cant agree since i have played all of them in the hardest levels. (if you cant use the squads given effectively and follow the basic principle of fire & move + suppress and flank attack u better stop playing BIA.)
Splinter cell games are not FPS but Role play game and its not difficult to play in hardest mode.
