I'm wondering if it's possible to have WhatsApp working on a laptop without having an active cell phone. I would like to install it on a laptop that my son is using so that if he has to text me he can do it without having to buy him a smartphone with a number. Too young to have one I think.

thanks, the only problem is that I don't know of any android emulators that will work on a 2005 Sony Vaio and I don't have a landline installed at home...

I use it on my pc but it's of course connected to my whatsapp account that I have on my smartphone.

any advice on a very light android emulator where I can then install TextNow?

I dont think that is possible. As far as i know,if you are using Whatsapp on a PC, it has to be on the same network as the device where it was activated by phone number.

I was just suggesting Hangouts as an alternative.
I actually read on different places that it is possible. Hangouts can be used only with google accounts and that's not what I need. I need to be able to send whatsapp texts from a pc without having a phone or sim card

I'm assuming you will do this on the Vaio from your other post so I guess you could try the following if it has to be Whatsapp:

Download Bluestacks and install it. It should be supported by Win XP SP3 - So you might want to run Windows Update first to make sure you have all the updates installed for XP.

Check if sound is working.

Enable/log in to Google Play.

Download Whatsapp.

Download TextNow (This can be done one some other device as well, like your phone. If you already have an account and a TextNow number there that haven't been used for Whatsapp earlier you can just use that one. It is just to receive a phone call from Whatsapp to get the activation code. )

And basically just follow the rest of the steps that is in the URL that @Colif posted.

But also as mentioned before, bluestacks might be choppy on that Vaio, since it does not meet the minimum requirements for it.

last night I tried all this stuff, but then found out that WhatsApp doesn't support windows xp so I can't even install it

too bad. i was all ready and stuff but nothing. Is there any other way I can use whatsapp on the Vaio? Through the web maybe but I think I would actually need a smartphone with an active whatsapp on it.

Yes, it does not, and the PC version only offers you to scan a QR code to sync it to your activated device. I should have specified, but you will have to download Whatsapp in Bluestacks and use it only trough there.
