you will be fine with a 2nd drive. If you have the room, don't stack the drives right on top of each other for better air flow, but don't worry too much. I once had a RAID setup with 6 hard drives stacked, and that got HOT. But you shouldn't have to worry with 2 drives.

Two drives should be no problem, but of course, more air flow and space is always better.

I added a second HD to my system awhile ago. A few important points to remember:

1. Do you have a place to put it?
2. Is the IDE (I'm assuming no SCSI drives here) cable long enough?
3. Does it use a ATA interface that is higher than your motherboard supports?

In relation to Question #3, my mobo only supports UDMA/ATA-33. My second HD was one that supported ATA-66. So, I added a PCI controller card; in this case, the Promise Ultra ATA 66.
If you do that, make sure there are only drives that support that type of interface (ex: ATA-66 drives on an ATA-66 controller card).

Heat should be the least of your concerns. Good luck!

ok i have a P3 800 mhz dell ( i am not smart enough yet to build my own )

1. i hope i have enough room... i would be mad if they didn't i haven't done anything to it so should there probably be rooM?

2. again i would hope the ide cable was long enough (BTW do i need to buy another IDE cable for each component i add that uses one of the IDE ports?

3. um i think mine is ATA 100 i got a 40 gb hard drive ata 100 at 7200 rpm this would be something similar to what i would add so i think so

3a. question about 3, if my motherboard only was say ata-66, i could still use a ata-100 drive if i added a ide controller for it?

Each IDE cable has 2 connectors for drives. ATA100 is backward compatible with ATA66. If possible, at least keep space of one bay between the drives.

so if the Motherboard only supported ata66 and my hard drive was ata100, could i still do this would i just have to get a IDE controller that supported ata100 or would i be ok with an old one?

It should work as ATA100 is backards compatible with ATA66, but some MB's don't agree with it. My sister bought an IBM 75GXP 30G ATA100 7.2K RPM HD and it wouldn't work right, it kept freezing up.
We figured it's due to the HPT ATA66 controller on her Abit BE6 (original) MB has issues with ATA100 drives. We bought a Promise Ultra ATA100 card and it works great now.
