So, awhile back I had my eye on the 660 ti when it was released. Just having right under the amount to get it, I am now kinda glad because they are generally $300 and for the cheapest 670 which is $350 I think it would be more beneficial to spend the extra on a gtx 670. Looking at benchmarks on anandtech, it doesnt seem like the 7870 is too far off from the gtx 670, in some or most games. obviously, Nvidia is favored in some situations. For $100 less the 7870 doesnt sound too bad. Then again, I seem to play a decent majority of games that worked with Nvidia or have PhysX. Currently though, Im playing Skyrim and Natural Selection 2 (which is more cpu dependent) Im using a i5-3570k and using the HD 4000 igpu currently. Its held up nicely for low/medium settings til now. Im on a 1600x900 monitor but I plan on getting a 1080 asap. hopefully dual monitor some day in the future, or a beter rez or an IPS panel. Anyway, Im trying to future-proof myself the best I can, while being able to play ultra on games with HD texture packs. The 7950's hardware specs seem better with the bigger memory bus and higher VRam, but it seems overall compatability with Nvidia is generally higher. I wouldnt mind checking out physx in some games either, though I know most games dont have it and its not a deciding factor. Im playing Skyrim, Natural Selection 2, and was playing Planetside 2 but since the patch I havent had decent performance. I also have dishonored, far cry 3, idk why Im listing games now though.
My biggest question is that I heard awhile back that they plan on dropping 660 ti prices in Quarter 1 of 2013. It is now February, and quarter one will only go in March correct? So Im hoping price drops will be soon. Does anyone have an estimated date? Im sick of waiting and I want to get a better card so I can FINALLY play skyrim at a higher setting, especially for the new DLC. I definitely dont want to buy a card though if I can get it $40 cheaper within the month or so. The problem is, I probably wont get the 660 ti now as it seems not the best option. The smaller memory bus causes it to be less able with AA and the like, correct? Now, Ive never been able to ever even use or see AA/FXAA because of my graphic options, but I want the card I purchase to be able to play everything max or close to it (Id love to see how it looks) but more importantly, I want to make a future-proofed decision that will run games very decently for awhile past this point as I cant make constant upgrades. Im hoping that the 670 prices will drop as well as the AMD competitor cards as well with the 660 ti price drops, correct? Anyone know when I can anticipate a price-drop?
If anyone can help me with my decision too, thatd be great. I can use Lucid if that changes anything. My cpu isnt OC currently because I still have stock cooler (though im getting really cool temps, I have a feelin this cut of silicon with OC well) and the Intel Performance Tuning warranty doesnt sound like a bad idea for $20. Ive recently heard that Nvidia cards have a more consistent and smoother framerate than ATI/AMD cards though. It seems debated and there's not much statistical info on it at all though. I definitely would prefer smoother and more consistent framerate if at all possible, for competition-like fps play. I did hear though that bitcoin mining is a lot better with the ATI options, not that I do it currently. Above all though I want it for good smooth gameplay and impressive graphics / htpc (though lower cards would work just as well for htpc) any input would be great, as well as any idea on when the price drop is in quarter 1 and if itll include other cards. Thanks.
