It looks like the hard drive may have failed. If it's less than 3TB capacity, you can test it with "Hitachi Drive Fitness Test for DOS".
Download the CD Image from here: https://www2.hgst.com/hdd/support/download.htm#DFT

Create a CD from the CD Image with IMGBURN: http://www.filehippo.com/download_imgburn

Then boot your laptop from that CD to test it's hard drive.
