When i change the refresh rate on a lcd tv it changes the resolution to a lower

my tv is samsung lcd 1920 1080p 120Hz 40" my graphics card is ati radeon 5850 the max Hz is 75hz on the graphics card when i set the graphics at 75Hz it changes my lcd tv to a lower resolution like lets say 1200 1200 instead of 1920 1080p when i set the graphic card to 60Hz it lets me run the 1920 1080p y does this happen and how can i set the graphics card to at least a 75Hz and run it at display area to 1920 1080p is it the graphics card? and if so what kind of graphics card do i need to run this settings and made for hardcore video gaming.also when i also use my playstation 3 it say resolution of 1920 1080p so my tv does 1920 1080p for sure. just when i set the graphics card setting to 75Hz on the graphics card on my desktop gateway fx windows 7 it dosnt keep it at 1920 1080p?

That's perfectly normal. You cannot change it unfortunately. At 1080p, it's 60Hz only (120Hz if you have a plasma screen TV).

before i bought it it says on the internet 1920 1080 120Hz bro it would of said 1920 1080 60Hz bro so your also sayin that i can play video games on plasma and led without ruining my tv? be more specific at first i didnt understand your respond

that doesn't make any sense how can i buy a 1920 1080 120Hz and only get 60Hz and cant even change the Hz on the tv i had a monitor 1920 1080 60Hz a 27" that's a big difference 27" 40" i'm not trying to make 1920 1080 bigger i'm just try to put the full potential on what the tv set for 1920 1080 120Hz are you saying that i bought a 60Hz and somehow where i bought it they made a mistake and gave me a 60Hz instead? nah cant be but plz explain on what you mean 1920 1080 only does 60Hz i been reading about tvs and stuff and no were it says that 1920 1080 only comes in 60Hz Ive seen that it comes in 1920 1080 60Hz 120Hz 240Hz and couple more but god knows ?

i think before i bought it or when i was shoping around on the internet it would of said 1920 1080 60Hz then i wouldnt of bought this peace of ishh but is said on ther internet site 1920 1080 120Hz and thats y i bought it that dont make sense

Apparently, you cannot set it to 120Hz. All HDTVs have 60Hz input and output. The 120Hz refers to the video processing done to improve quality and image clarity. So technically you can only run 60Hz at 1080p. Only 3D TVs have 120Hz input and output, just like 3D Monitors.

If your watching TV, the image is of higher quality and runs smoother than that of a 60Hz HDTV. Using it as a monitor won't get you true 120Hz.

HDMI doesn't support using 120Hz refresh rates. Max is 1080P/60fps

What exactly are you using to connect from your video card to your TV? HDMI? DP?

EDIT: BTW theres different version of 120Hz screens....

Theres "True" 120HZ screens - which can actually display at 120Hz - but you require Display port Connectivity as HDMI doesn't have enough bandwidth for 1080p/120Hz

The "faux 120Hz screens" take in a signal at 60Hz - but refreshes the image 2x internally. So this should allow you to see frames inbetween 60 and 120Hz, making a smoother image (if you computer can display more than 100FPS).

For anyone having troubles with their screen resolution when they change the refresh rate I would suggest going to their graphic card settings and finding the Extended Display Identification Data AND disabling it! It let's your drivers graphic's card auto-detect the maximum refresh rate with your screen resolutions.

I had the same problem when I changed the graphic card and would not let me use my accustomed screen size and refresh rate although on my old card it worked like a charm.
