When PC goes to sleep, it wakes up then turns off

When I put my PC into sleep mode, it will stay asleep for about 10 minutes or so. After that, it wakes up, but nothing appears on the screen. After about 30 seconds, the PC will shut off. Completely shut off, not just put into sleep mode. When I turn it back on, it goes through BIOS and boots up normally to the lock screen, but when I unlock it, I notice that the applications that were left open (Skype) remain open, almost as if the PC went into hibernate mode. I have no idea what's causing it, all I know is it happened around the time that I installed the Windows 10 Anniversary update. If anyone has any suggestions, I'll gladly try them. If you need to see event viewer, please tell me what you need to see and I'll try and find the log.

Thanks,
Trilliante

Your Power Options > Hibrid sleep and Hibernation may be enabled and to close (10 min) after Sleep. Check it as follows:

1. Right click Start > Control Panel > Power Options > Power Plan in use:
OR
2. Start > Settings > System > Power and Sleep > Additional Power Settings > Power Plan in use:

3. Change Plan Settings > Change Advanced Power Settings > Sleep > Allow Hybrid sleep = Set to Off, Hibernate After = Set to Never.

This fixed it for awhile, but it recently started doing it again. It doesn't do it nearly as often, but if I leave my PC asleep and don't wake it back up within a few hours, it shuts itself off again. Anyone have any ideas?

1. Can you take a screenshot of the Power Options > Plan being used > with Sleep expanded to see all the settings related to Sleep, Hybrid Sleep, and Hibernation?.. cut excess parts from the image and upload it to postimage, tynipic, etc. and post the link or image here.

2. You could check the BIOS power options and see if Sleep/Standby sleep mode S3 is enabled... I doubt this is the case because if the problem started after installing the Windows 10 aniversary update, but you have to check every possible cause. A few basic System Specifications specially motherboard make and model would help find the user manual and possibly find something related to BIOS sleep settings.

BTW, did you clean install Win 10 aniversary, updated it from pevious Windows 10 or from 7/8.1?

1) http://prntscr.com/cf0ez2
2) I found 5 major things that I think are referencing sleep modes. (For reference, I have an ASRock 990FX Killer motherboard with an AMD FX8320 CPU)
a) CPU Enhanced Halt State (C1E): Disabled
b) Core C6 Mode: Enabled
c) Suspend to RAM: Auto (Disabling allows PC to go into S1 state, auto allows PC to enter S3 state)
d) Check Read Bit: Enabled (Allows PC to enter the OS's S3 state when the HDD is read)
e) USB PHY: Enabled (USB Phy can be powered down to S4/S5)
* I do remember entering the BIOS at some point before this happened. I believe that I had changed everything back to the way ti was before, but it's possible one of these things has been changed to something that would be causing it.
3) This computer was updated to Windows 10 from Windows 7. There have been no clean installs since the installation of Windows 7.

Based on reading the link you provided, I believe my PC is entering the S4 state. If it were the S3 state, the peripherals should be able to wake it, and the power LED on the front of the case should be blinking to let me know that it is in sleep mode. When this issue happens, I am only able to wake it VIA the power button, and the PC has to boot through BIOS.

If needed, I will try to get the Event Viewer logs next time it happens.

From the Balanced power Plan:

Sleep After 15 min: OK

Allow Hybrid Sleep: OK

Hibernate after: OK

Allow wake timers: Disable it, and check the Scheduled Tasks for any coincidence on auto starting the computer... may be nothing to it but better keep it disabled. wake timers are to enable programmed auto starts for instance if you want the computer to be on at a given date and time... say you want to access it remotely, or want it to be on the moment you want to use, etc.

S4 Sleep State is Hibernation and it's disabled according to your screenshot so it shouldn't be going on. Hibernation can only start the computer with the power button... though the MSDN article says the keyboard can start it.. so I suppose that's according to what improvements and settings a motherboard BIOS includes.

On S5 Says MSDN.Microsoft.com: "The system appears to be off. This state is comprised of a full shutdown and boot cycle"... so both S4 and S5 should be disabled and any setting that includes S4 and S5 should be disabled... Only SI through S3 should be enabled, and to prevent the computer from waking up when touching the keyboard or mouse, disable your peripherals from the Device Manager device properties > Power Management... but to retain some control to wake the computer with the keyboard, you can program a specific key in the BIOS. Usual devices are Network Adapter, Wake on LAN shoul also be disabled in the BIOS, also keyboard, mouse, you might also find something to apply in this article, or in any other from the Google search results below.

On your d) Check Read Bit: Enabled, if you have an SSD it may cause issues during S3 resume. Check full comment.

One detail I don't agree with from your comment on S3, is no LEDs should be blinking... If a LED is blinking, it may not be going into sleep mode when it wakes up 10 min later and goes to hibernation. Sleep mode in State S3 should appear to be completely shut down... but touching the keyboard, specific kbd key, or mouse which-what-ever you configured should awake it. BTW is your computer not in a closed room, where no one even a dog, cat, can touch it, or something like a frig starting can cause a vibration that wakes it?.. S3 state can be very sensitive and any shaking or vibration of the desk can awake it.

I fixed mine with Motherboard Settings Alone and isolated the cause to KB3213986 cumulative update for 1607.I am running on an Asus P8Z77-V Deluxe Motherboard with I7-3770K Processor. After Installing Win 10 Ver. 1607 on my SSD system drive sleep still worked and I cloned the entire drive to a hard drive as a backup. Shortly after sleep started failing on my system and I blamed it on myself for some change I had made as I am an incessant settings tweeker. I got sick of trying to fix it then remembered my clone and booted up on it. It still worked--sleep OK. I compared the advanced power options between the 2 drives -Identical ?? I cloned the working Hard Drive back to my SSD to se if it was SSD related - Still worked fine !! Several days later I got one of those "Installing updated please don't turn off" messages and after that sleep function crashed. It had installed KB3213986 Cumulative update for 1607. All power settings between the 2 drives still identical but one worked and the other did not. I checked the Update history on both drives and on the Hard Drive that particular update had FAILED 3 times which is why sleep kept working. On the newly restored SSD it was successful which caused sleep to fail after its installation.
I failed to write down the motherboard settings I changed (Stupid Stupid !!) as I did not think it would work. Here are the settings arias I remember making changes. In Tweak- EPU Power saving mode -Enabled, EPU settings - Auto. In Advanced ERP Ready - Disabled. In Advanced >System Agent, Remap - Enabled, in Graphics all Auto and Enabled. In CPU all Auto and Enabled in all sub menus EXCEPT CPUID Max - Disabled. That brought sleep function back to operating normally. I am very happy now and hope this post helps someone else, Thanks to whoever previously brought up Motherboard settings - That did it for me after months of frustration.

Hi, i have the same rig of yours: P8Z77-V deluxe + 3770K. It was just nice before windows 10 updates. I carefully set the mobo just the way you did, but still having contantly BSODs after sleep. Can you please help me sending pictures of your mobo settings? Thanks a lot!

This issue is apparently caused by the ASUS Wi-Fi GO! Card Software which wakes the computer if the Power Saving S5 ACPI power state is enabled.

This thread suggests to enable ErP Ready which disables; PME Event Wake Up, Power On By Mouse, Power On By Keyboard, and Wake On LAN.

What exaclty is ErP in BIOS?
http://www.tomshardware.com/answers/id-2651257/exaclty-erp-bios.html

--------------------------------------
Possible Solutions: (in order of convenience)
1. Disable the W-Fi GO! Software or the software setting that wakes the computer.
2. Disable the BIOS S5 ACPI Power State
3. Enable ErP Ready (Disables S5 but also Power On by Mouse or Keyboard)
4. Disable the Wi-Fi Card and use Ethernet Connection
