Where is the cheapest place to buy ram right now? Upgrading Ram advice

I currently have 4 sticks of ram

1 GB, 1GB, 2GB, 2GB. (6144 MB DDR3 Dual Channel)

I want to get rid of the two 1GB's and add in 2 x 4GB or 2 X 8 GB?

This is my first time upgrading my ram. Can my computer handle a 2 x 4 GB or maybe even a 2 x 8 GB?

Is there anything i need to be aware of when upgrading ram?

The specs say 16gb max but was made before 8gb sticks were available so there is no way to tell for sure. The same sized sticks should be in 1/2 and 3/4 but is odd that it still says dual channel. I think the voltage of the ram that i'm currently using is 1.5V not sure though. I want to upgrade so that i can run VMWare more effectively
