Which AMD Cpu should I get 64X2 or Opeteron?

I'm configuring a new PC but I'm not sure which CPU to get. I want to have Dual Core and initially looked at the 64X2 3800 but now I've seen the Opteron 165 selling for the same price. Which one is faster? I guess thats a relative question given what I want to use the PC for. Well it will be used as a home Desktop/ network server. Main apps used are word, excel, photoshop, usually I run multiple apps at once and have noticed that many programs like internet security suites run in the background taking up resources and cpu time.

I'm building the PC for some future proofing, so should I use a socket 939 or something else? I don't understand the speed specs for each of these cpu's especially as the opteron's have lower clock speeds compared to the 64X2. Oh, one last thing I will be overclocking down the track. I hope you can provide some assistance?

did a quick search, seems like people are pushing the Opteron. Can anyone explain the model numbers, eg, 165, 170 etc? how do I know which model to get? Don't tell me I have to search for that question too 😳

Get a 165 Opteron. Very good OC'er and pretty much is the going fad right now. I just got mine all setup and I love it so far. I haven't OC'd it yet but from what I understand, I can get it run like an FX60. Hopefully if I don't turn it into a charcoal briquet, it'll run that way.

Opteron numbering scheme:

1xx = 1 way processor (1 system processor may be used)
2xx= 2 way processor (up to 2 system processors may be used together)
8xx= 4 way processor (up to 4 system processors may be used together)

Cores have absolutely no bearing on the number of system processors that may be used together. In other words, you can still use 2 Opteron 265's together for a total of 4 system cores.

The numbers in the 2nd two xx's all correspond to clock speed and cache size. There are too many to list.

Get the Opteron, you can overclock the 165 to 2.7 GHz with stock cooling.

you guys forget some thing the opty 165 runs at lower wattage than the x2 3800 heres a graph

2 reasons:

1. Price; it's the cheapest dual core Opteron AMD makes
2. It's an outstanding overclocker. Like everyone said, you can OC to Athlon FX-60 speeds. So if you're an overclocker, it's pointless to spend the extra bucks on a 170 or 175.

You're right, they are all dual-core processors. The preceeding number indicates how many of those dual-core processors may be used in one box.

So like he said, a 265 means that you can run 2x 265's in one box for a total of 4 cores.

Thanks - that's the answer I was looking for. I'm going to spend a couple extra bux though and spring for the 170 which has the 10x multiplier instead of the 165 which only has a 9x multiplier.

FSB 300mhz x10 = 3ghz
FSB 300mhz x9 = 2.7ghz

I'll post if I actually make it there 8)

dual core, not dual processors. 1xx may have 2 cores, but you can't run 2 independent opteron processors on one mobo.

PS thanks so much everyone on this forum. a couple weeks ago, the opteron 165 was under $300 and now they're like $330 at minimum. GRRRR.
