Hi all. I currently have an HP ProBook 4540s that is starting to run a little bit slow. It seems especially slow after the latest Windows Update that I did last night. It looks like more RAM is being taken up for some reason after this update. I still have the stock 4 GB of RAM that came with the computer. I've had it for two years and have the original Windows 7 installed. I haven't done a reinstall. Nor have I done defrag or any kind of "cleanup".

I mostly do pretty standard things, web browsing, email, Word, Excel, some HD streaming. The thing that takes up quite a bit of RAM is DragonSpeak 12, which I do a lot of dictation with. Right now, my memory is about 75% filled as I am typing. with 7 tabs on Chrome open, a Word document and Dragon.

Would you suggest upgrading the RAM? I'd prefer to not have to do a whole reinstall, at least not for a couple months since I am very busy with things right now. If so which brand would you suggest and how many GB? I went on crucial.com and looked at the options but there are so many choices. And I'm not sure what all the numbers mean such as "DDR3 PC3-14900 • 10-10-10-30 • Unbuffered • NON-ECC • DDR3-1866 • 1.35V • 1024Meg x 64". I know what a few of these mean because I used to sell and build PCs about 10-15 years ago, but I've been out of it for so long I'm not sure what all of these mean and how to decipher what exactly to get!

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction!

I would defrag your laptop first and see how it goes before investing in more memory. If you do i recommend Corsair.

I recommend CCleaner.

I checked defrag and it looks like it has been doing it automatically. It says 0% fragmented.

Also can you please point me towards in your opinion how much RAM I should get in addition to a brand?
