  • Approximate Purchase Date:
ASAP subject to hard decision making and as these are £300 over budget and right before Christmas it may have to wait a bit, was hoping to get this done for Balck Friday /Cyber Monday
    Follwing the requested format....

    Budget Range:
(In UK so pounds) £2750 - £3000 was the ideal, especailly with Christmas and no cash after next week till 21st dec comming up. But all the advise Im getting is pushing me over to around £3350. If Possible want it back down. but may hvae to go up to this figure.

System Usage from Most to Least Important:

CAD for modelling, 3d Printing and visual, Editing, Rendering, Encoding, 3d Animation, Graphics, Podcasting, whilst watching downloaded tv shows, lots open at once usually 2 screens plus, maybe some games but tend to avoid as then dont get other stuff done.

    Software to include:

    • Rhino with V-ray Rendering and various addon ons,
Solidworks with Key Shot Rendering... Want also to try Maxwell Render
Adobe Premier and After Effects, ideally things like green screen work
      Looking to learn
      Autodesk Maya
      3D Studio Max
      Softimgage
      Z-Brush
      Mudbox
      Autodesk Inventor
      Vectorworks
      Google Sketchup
      Autocad
      Photoshop Illustrator and Indesign.
      Maybe some webdesign -
      Podcasting experiments with Adobe Audition

    Are you buying a monitor:
Not yet... tryin to keep down budget, can get later will use my ultra hi def 40" Samsung TV for moment till can get a 2nd or 3rd monitor/

Also planning on getting/building a raid 1 mirror pair of Seagate Barracuda Pro 4 tb drives when I get the cash later and online storage backup.

Do you need to buy OS:
    Already in the build

    Preferred Website(s) for Parts:
At the moment been looking to have a custom build at PC Specialist. Whilst have dealth with replacing hard drives, DVD drives, Graphics Tablets, RAM, software before etc am soewhat nervous about ***ing up the processor, power and motherboard and around £3000 thats some expensive balls ups. But am curious how much I could save and where I could go for parts or suppliers with better deals. Most likely with some supervision help would do OK by wary of risk as no fall back cash.

Also concerned about warrantees given how much computers go wrong.

    Location: City, State/Region, Country -

    UK, London

Parts Preferences: Everyoen has said to go for the quadro 4000 as opposed to 2000 and mostly been pushed away from more powerful Games card to more accurate Quadro cards thouhs is there a difference between Nvida and PNY?

    Overclocking:

Maybe Never done it and looking for somethging long lastign and reliable not burn out and replace.

    SLI or Crossfire:

Maybe future, Im struggling to get this so onus grpahcis cards are not on cars for a long time but would like the option in the future

    Your Monitor Resolution:

Not relevant at present will look into secondary montirs later

    Additional Comments:

Quieter PC preferred. Whilst a cool looker is welcomed thats not its primary purpose to show off to mates, plus its in my bedroom, a disco light if left to render at night is not good for sleep.

What is important is expanadability, being able to fit things like water coolers, bluetooth, , easy to maintain, speed reliability, long lasting upgrading later etc.

As said trying to get budget down, ( or AMD Threadripper routes, thying to get the balance. Which of the software is single core above)

And Most Importantly, Why Are You Upgrading:

been held back a year and a half when I took down my portfolio as website host was extrosionist just before by i5 laptop went down perminentaly and it took months to recover much of my wrks, then monots broke then been stuck using a parents I3 laptop... Looking to get at proper grown up workstation that can do things quick and efficient.

    anyway to do a poll?

These are from PCSpecialist.co.uk Open to suggestions, anyone got an idea how much would be saved if I built own and how would warrantees work?

    Open to suggestions

  • You listed the same built twice.

Both are a bit on the expensive side compared to diy but out of the 2 the threadripper is going to win in almost any of your usecases (only where heavy single core performance is needed it's going lag behind a bit but not much).

Actually you will have to compare between two use cases:

One is active work, like modeling, animating, anything you want to tweak in real-time, this benefits extremely from high core-clocks.
The other use case are highly parallelizeable things like rendering and encoding. This benefits more from the # of cores.

I usually think about it this way: if I bill the client for my work time a lot more than for the render/encoding time, then I should go the high-core-clock route. If you basically don't do lots of active work and just render out images or videos all the time, then go max # of cores route.

This article helped me a lot in this regard:
https://www.cgdirector.com/best-computer-3d-modeling-rendering/

Of course it would be best to get one high-core-clock computer such as i9 9900k and one "rendernode" that just has a really strong cpu like the 2990wx.

But that of course is expensive.

Thank you ... on a side note is it a wise idea to try and reduce the build cost by gettign the Quadro p4000 card off ebay 2nd hand... are the likly to be fine from a 100% member, how tough and long lastign are they, could now off few hundred but would this affect warrantees?

I would go the AMD route but also I'm almost positive that you will need more RAM than 16gb for that kind of work system!! The article that alexflawion linked to itself says that 32-64gb is the target range! You don't want to invest a ton of money into a system that doesn't have ALL the things you need!

You can build better for less money.

16 core, 32gb of memory, more storage.

The Ram will be inreased, most likely a month or 2 after when have more money. Its a case of get most now and finish off when have more cash so can get going. Or should I just wait, somone said you may run into problem if adding more ram later.

was also wondering about Intel K as opposed to X processors ie i9 9900k as oopposed to i9 9900x. What exactly are all the differences?

And 2nd hand quadro 4000 card to reduce costs as mentioned above whiohc could pay for the ram?

Wondingnabout a compromise processor between mulitcore/thread and raw single core power.

Best of both worlds thing as can only afford the one.

Also was toying with the idea of getting the pny quadro 4000 GPU second hand on Ebay from a 100% positive rep seller as seen several on ebay for half or 2/3 the price of a new one in the build, how risky is this, how reliable and long wearign are the quadro graphics caards

Ok slower performance can be handled, errors not so much.

Was wondering on the difference between the K and X models as well as last year 7900x and 9900x

The supplier PC specislist I was going with only does X models but keep hearig the K model was faster
