So i was originally thinking about getting a Ryzen 5 1600 with a RX 580 for my new gaming pc. With the mining craze and the stock issues with the RX 580 i thought of maybe buying the same cpu with a GTX 1070.

But today a found a prebuilt pc with a discount of about 500 usd, originally costing about 1730 usd. It has a GTX 1070 with an i5 7400. This is in norway by the way. For reference, the ryzen build with an rx 580 would cost me about 1170 USD, while the prebuilt pc would cost me 1240 usd.

Is the extra money worth the upgrade? Or will the i5 bottleneck the 1070 so much that it wont be worth it?

Solution
The i5 will not bottleneck the 1070, however you give up a lot of CPU power trading the 1600 for the i5. Ryzen has all but killed i3 and i5 tbh.

EDIT: The 1070 and 1600 would be a great combo if you can swing it, I plan on getting a ryzen 2 cpu to go with my 1060 when that eventually happens

So what do you think would perform better overall? An i5 7400 with a 1070 or a R5 1600 with a 1060 6gb?
Cause I can't switch the i5 since it's a prebuilt system

for gaming specifically go for the i5 setup with the 1070

you have an upgrade path to the i7 7700k and a much better gpu

no amount of extra cores will close the gap between a 1060 and a 1070
