I have an option between two configurations for my main tower, presently.

Tower one

i7-980X @ 4.5GHz
ASUS Rampage III Gene
12GB 1866MHz
Asus R9-290
1TB hdd

or

tower two

i5-4670K @ 4.1GHz
Gigabyte z87 mobo
8GB 1600MHz
ASUS R9-290
1TB HDD

I'm asking which would be best overall, if the idea was to not upgrade for another 1 1/2 - 2 years? I do some gaming here and there, as I play a first person shooter called blacklight retribution and play swtor. I'll also be playing any possible new elder scrolls games in that time, and any new star wars games including the possible mmo replacement for swtor.

I also do lots of video editing/rendering. Just curious which tower you'd go with. I know the 4670K has moderately better performance per core, but the extreme i7 has 12 threads, which would just be golden for rendering times.

Also, this is kind of hypothetical, but I'm getting a Titan X in a week at a discount from a friend that decided to go with tri sli 980's. I'll also be getting another Titan X as a birthday gift next month from multiple family/friends chipping in. Which processor would drive them better? I know the 4670K would be a bottleneck on sli titan x's. Would the 980X fair better with more cores? I know the 4xxx & 5xxx i7's are less of a bottleneck on a gpu solution that powerful
