Which CPU do i need for Dota 2? 6700k?

Hello folks,

I'm currently using an i5 4690k clocked at 4.2GHz, 8G 1866MHz ram and Gigabyte z97x Mobo all paired with GTX 1070 in order to play Dota 2. I also have 1440p 165Hz monitor, but i can't hit that FPS in the game, actually with new patch (7.00) i'm sitting around 130FPS at the start of the game, which slowly drops to 110FPS till the end. So is it just poor optimisation (i have similar FPS in some 2015 AAA titles as in Dota 2) or is it about something else? Dota 2 is CPU bound game, but still my CPU never goes above 80-85% usage, while GPU is running at around 30%, maximum 50%. So do i need to upgrade my CPU and with that whole platform, would i7 4790K do better? I can't find much new dota 2 benchmarks (which are done after 7.00 patch).

Please keep in mind that i'm only talking about the 7.00 patch and later.

Thanks and happy holidays.

If your cpu isn't at 100% as it is then upgrading to an i7 for the hyper threading isn't going to improve things much if at all. Try overclocking your i5 a bit more, 4.2 is a pretty mild oc. A gtx 1070 is overkill for dota 2 even at 1440p, the game is mostly cpu dependent. You might try checking that it's running the default dx9, dx11 and opengl result in lower fps.

If that doesn't work maybe try some of the other dx settings, some people say dx11 works better on nvidia cards. You might also want to check this thread on removing the fps cap (120fps).

I don't think DOTA2 is well threaded. Skylake/Kaby Lake might offer 5-10% more performance at the same clocks and slightly higher clockspeeds, so you might be looking at a 10-20% in an absolute best-case scenario. An i3 7350K @ 5ghz would perform the same in that game as a 7700K @ 5ghz, though an i5 or i7 would be better suited other AAA games.
