So if you'd have to choose between Phenom II X4 945 and Athlon X4 860K what would you choose for overclocking? And which is better overall at performance in games?

Solution
here is a haswell i3 (assuming you are reusing ddr3 ram you already have) for $150

CPU: Intel Core i3-4170 3.7GHz Dual-Core Processor ($114.78 @ OutletPC)
Motherboard: MSI H81M-P33 Micro ATX LGA1150 Motherboard ($42.98 @ Newegg)
Total: $157.76

vs the 860k and a decent mobo for overclocking for $130. throw in some extra cooling for the overclock and you're at the same price or more than the i3.

CPU: AMD Athlon X4 860K 3.7GHz...
the x4 860k is a lot newer and better for gaming, however it is still a rather weak gaming cpu.

as for how much of an oc you can get depends on the chip you get, cooling and a number of other factors. no one can really say what a chip can do until it is actually doing it.

if you have a decent budget, there are much better cpu's you can go with. even an i3 would outperform the 860k every time!

That's the problem, my budget is low. If i had a budget i would go straight for a i7, wouldn't mess around with those toys...

that $20 for the i3 yields a BIG difference in performance. now if you already have other pieces then of course this changes things but assuming you're reusing ram i'd go with the i3. if you are buying ram as well, then a newer skylake i3 with ddr4 ram is about the same price as the haswell and gives an even better performance boost over the 860k.

of course i am also assuming you're in the US where these prices are valid.

I'm in Serbia, Europe... And i don't see a reason why i should go with a dual core INTEL processor, urrgh i hate those... I plan on clocking the Athlon to a decent 4.8GHz... Right now i have a Phenom II X4 945, the thing is, i can switch with a guy that has the Athlon, for free. And i already have the mobo and stuff, and i am not quite happy with the Phenom performance.
TY for the help

This is why you should consider an Intel dual core:

Athlon X4 is similar to FX-4300, maybe a little slower. Even overclocked to the max, the Athlon X4 will not be nearly as fast as the i3. Of course, if it's free, that certainly affects things.

Still sticking to the AMD's...
