APPROXIMATE PURCHASE DATE: Black Friday deal
BUDGET RANGE: Under $450

USAGE FROM MOST TO LEAST IMPORTANT: Gaming, Mechwarrior 5(mercs and clans), Battletech(Roguetech enhanced), Warhammer 2, similar 'lower tier' games more turn based than FPS Currently can play MW5 Mercs, MW5 Clans not playable at all(GPU stall)

CURRENT GPU AND POWER SUPPLY: ASUS GeForce 1050ti, will upgrade PSU if I need to

OTHER RELEVANT SYSTEM SPECS: i3-12100F currently going to i5-12600KF in next day or two... Xmas should be Ryzen 9800X3D upgrade.

PREFERRED WEBSITE(S) FOR PARTS: any reputable place
COUNTRY OF ORIGIN: United States

MONITOR RESOLUTION: I use window mode of1920x1080 or 1920x1200 on a 4k monitor. I don't mind lowered settings to get smoother frame rate.

I listed three chipsets in my post title but research has told me not to touch anything with 8GB so unless I can get talked into it, I'll skip it. Of the two remaining, I found MSI Ventus rtx 4060ti with 16 GB and rtx 4070 (no super or ti) with 12 GB to be close enough in price for me to eyeball both.

Should the 12GB of the 4070 deter me from it?

Welcome to the forums, newcomer!

I wouldn't spend on either of them and look at the RTX4070 Ti Super, instead. Just curious, where are you seeing the RTX 4070 at or less than $450?

What is your current PSU's make, model and age?

I found one on new egg that was near enough to $450 for me to consider($480):

As for the Super, $600 is out of the question.

I put $450 for the budget because I had to put a number... but I can stretch it a little bit if the gain in warranted. $30 is stretching the budget... $600 is breaking it entirely

As noted on the PSU, without pulling the computer apart, I can't tell you. But, as noted, if it is not up to snuff, I will replace it to run whatever card I end up with.

That answer is paradoxical. We won't know if it's up to the task without you adding that info.

The answer is the answer. If my current PSU is a 250W piece of garbage, I will buy the 750W++++ that the new GPU requires for my system. Basically, the system WILL have an adequate PSU no matter what GPU I pick.

I know for a fact my PSU isn't 250W but was a quality brand. But whether it is 450W, 650W, or more, I couldn't tell you... it is more than 3 years old.

Needing to know the specific PSU is important.

There are some 650w PSUs that are just fine.
There are some I wouldn't use to power a desk lamp.

Except for the fact I'm not married to my current PSU in any way shape or form and will upgrade it if it isn't up to snuff.

But since it appears that according to two posters so far think that I'm married to my current PSU and there is zero chance I can upgrade:homer:

I took time to rip into my computer just so you can tell me whether it will have to get upgraded or not.

It is an EVGA Supernova NEX650G PSU. The PN is 120-G1-0650.

So back to the question:
Is the rtx 4070 (no super or ti) with 12 GB worth $30USD more than MSI Ventus rtx 4060ti with 16 GB?

And to tie the above into the thread derailment: if the rtx 4070 is the way to go, is the EVGA PSU sufficient quality to run it? MSI says 650W recommended for the 4070 and 550W for 4060ti.
