I am at 388 version. Is it true that new driver makes old card slow? Should I upgrade the driver? Are there any benefits?

Solution

I don't think its true. if it were true, people would just use the previous working version and stop updating.

software updates and bug patches as well as new features/extra performance.
after three generations the driver itself may not benefit (performance boosts) your card anymore, but it will slow nothing. you are at generation 2. when the rtx 4xxx series comes out newer driver may not be of aid. performance wise

example. my 6 year old HD 7950 does not benefit from newer drivers anymore, already as optimized as it can get, but the software that comes with the driver is updated periodically.

The matter is kind of a toss up, actually, if you don't install latest drivers, the newer games will be reduced. If you install said drivers that cripple performance, you're getting reduced performance in games.

It's been documented where drivers will cause people to migrate for newer hardware. What games are you playing? You should be fine as is.

I'm not into game that much. The main use of GPU is for parallel computing.
There are many speculations online that nvdia make a newer driver that intentionally slow down the old card. That's the only thing making me uncomfortable upgrading it. It's like you are been cheated.

OK
" Nvidia make a newer driver that intentionally slow down the old card." How much that is true?

when a driver favors one benchmark or the other it races across the internet like a wildfire, there would have been much more made of the issue.
