Which drivers get installed first?

My current system is slowly recovering from some massive driver conflicts that have lead me to start over with a fresh WinXP Pro install. After the OS install, in what order should I install the drivers? I have the chipset drivers, the onboard sound driver, the onboard Gigabit LAN driver and the video card drivers burned to a CD and ready to install.

Actually I dug into an old (June 2003) support ticket I had submitted to Asus when the NIC on my motherboard (Asus P4P800) had stopped working. They suggested the following order for driver installation:
1)Chipset drivers
2)DirectX
3)Video card drivers
4)SCSI/ATA
5)Lan/NIC
6)Modem, then any other driver
7)Absolutely last, the Sound Drivers (mobo has onboard sound)

Just thought I would post this in case anyone else might want to know.

If anyone happens to know why this specific order of driver installation was suggested as optimal, I'd be interested in knowing.
