I have been running low on disk space and instead of buying a new 1TB internal HDD I have decided I want to get a large (3-4TB) external to hold movies or any other large file. Currently I am in a dilemma, should I get the Fantom Drive GF3B4000U 4TB or a WD 4TB My Book? Some things I have heard about the Fantom Drive is that they have a Hitachi HDD inside (I do not know if this is true) if this is to be believed then it should have a lower failure rate than the WD. If there are other drives around this price point that would be better PLEASE share them.

If you're not interested in the one I linked (seagate). Go with the Western Digital drive, because their drives are very good quality.

Avoid the Fantom.

Hi there 77Slumber77,

The thing is that, mechanical drives just fail, in many cases even without a warning. So, you should always keep your most important data stored on at least two places. You could consider some two bay devices(setting up RAID 1 for example).
I doubt that anyone could tell you which is the best or most durable one. Users, would suggest some drives based on their experience. You can't really know if this drive would last for 10 years or fail in a week.

Apart from that, I would agree with TwinDenis. In case you are using a desktop machine, you could consider getting an internal drive. They are considered to be more reliable than externals(which are moved around, could be dropped and in many cases have have some enclosure, ports related issues).
