Which gaming card will run in my dell optiplex 740

For what purpose do you want to upgrade your card?? The 8400 is a pretty old card and you cannot expect much from it now!!

Ok, my cpu cabinet is slim which can accomodate card of height not more than 3 inches than normal graphic card of 4.3 inches.
so, can u tell me which one to buy.

Then you need at least one of the following cards:

ATI 4650 / 5550
Geforce 240 / 440

I would go for an ATI 5670
What´s your psu?

Do you have the tower or desktop 740? That will limit you a lot as in what card you can get.

For games you want something higher than a 4350, although it's way better than an 8400. The only thing that is good about the 8400 is that it's cheap and there are for some reason tons of manufacturers that sell it. But for gaming cheap is not good.

I have desktop 740 which limit the graphic card.But according to my friend, a normal graphic card after removing its metal plate can be used with slim model CPU.

That won't work, it will be too tall, and you can't remove the metal plate since then you won't have anything to keep it stable.

He has an Athalon 62 X2 and was looking at an 8400, I don't think there will be any differences in speeds in that computer for the 2 cards. But it's a faster card, if you want to spend the extra money.
